Purpose of PostThe chef supervisor must be able to prepare food required for lunch time café and catered events and is responsible for the successful daily operations of the kitchen and the cafe. They assist with training, managing, and overseeing the staff and volunteer trainees to ensure a high level of customer service.

Hours of work22.5 hours per week over 3/4 days.In addition you will be entitled to a 30 minute lunch break. On occasion you may be required to work a Bank Holiday or a Sunday

Location:Paper & Cup, 83 St Paul's Way, London E3 4AJ. On occasion you will also be required to cover at Paper & Cup,18 Calvert Avenue, London E2 7JP.

Spitalfields Crypt Trust (SCT) is an East London charity providing practical help, support and training to people who have been homeless and suffering from addiction. It runs a homeless drop-in, rehabilitation hostel, personal development and training centre, and two social enterprises supporting people in recovery from addictions to put their lives back together.

Set up over 50 years ago, the charity was one of the first in the UK to provide shelter to homeless, alcoholic men.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Cooking:

- To be able to personally prepare food required for lunch menu and catered events observing all food hygiene regulations and requirements

- Assisting with menu planning, ensuring correct margins are made and menu is compatible with customer needs

  • To motivate the team of café volunteers to provide a consistent high quality service

(Volunteers will include service user trainees)

  • To ensure volunteers are following correct food safety guidelines and are able to relate to current policies.
  • To ensure that team building is effective
  • To assist with training in barista skills
  • To serve as one of the lead customer service contacts for the café ensuring the highest standard of customer care at all times
  • To take customer orders, and prepare food and drinks to customer specifications
  • To ensure that all customers are served in a friendly and efficient manner
  • To ensure all comments and complaints are passed on immediately to the Manager
  • To maintain high standards of personal hygiene and appearance
  • To ensure that all policies, procedural requirements and legislation of both client and SCT are adhered to at all times
  • To assist in maintaining all legal health, hygiene and safety records
  • To be responsible for keeping the café area clean, neat and orderly at all times
  • To ensure all counters, fridges and tables are set up prior to service time
  • To ensure constant replenishment of counters and fridges throughout service
  • To ensure attractive presentation of food throughout service
  • To manage vendors and maintain inventory
  • To order supplies for the café and keep stock of deliveries
  • To be responsible for till management
  • To ensure all accidents and faulty equipment is reported to the Manager
  • To ensure that all new ideas are communicated to the Manager
  • To ensure all time schedules are adhered to
  • To ensure that administration is maintained to the highest standards
  • To replenish shelves with goods and books as necessary

GENERAL

  • To ensure full attendance at all training sessions, meetings and reviews
  • To undertake any other duties consistent with the post.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

ESSENTIAL:

  • Training in the food industry
  • To hold, or willing to obtain, a level 2 food safety and hygiene certificate
  • Experience of Customer Service and working in a café/similar environment
  • Experience of management or leading a team
  • Barista skills
  • An understanding of food and beverage operations

DESIRABLE:

  • Understanding of working with people from troubled backgrounds
