  1. Where can I make an application? At the nearest SASSA local or district office in your area
  1. Can I apply online? Not at the moment. For security reasons, application forms can only be obtained at the local and district offices and should be completed in front of SASSA officials
  1. Can I apply on behalf of my parents? All adult beneficiaries should apply for themselves, In a case where an applicant is not in a position to complete the form, a SASSA official would be available to assist
  1. What are the qualifying ages for all social grants?
  • Old Age – if female 60 years and above, if male presently 63 years and older but reducing
  • War Veteran – 60 years and older, or veterans under 60 due to medical reasons
  • Disability – between the ages of 18 and 60 if female and 18 and 63 years if male
  • Care dependency – between the ages of 1 and 18 years
  • Foster Care – between the ages of 1 and 18 years
  • Child Support – between the ages of 0 to 14 years
  1. Should I be a South African citizen to qualify for a social grant? The applicant should be a South African citizen or permanent resident of South Africa
  1. What supporting documents should I bring along when making an application
  • A 13 digit South African ID book
  • Proof of residence
  • Proof of Marital status : marriage certificate, divorce order and agreement and death certificate of the late spouse (if a widow/er)
  • Proof of income and assets of the applicant as well as his/her spouse
  • Bank statements for a period of 3 consecutive months
  • Proof of private pension
  • Interest/dividends earned on investments and bank accounts
  • Explanation of any deposits and credits in the bank accounts
  • If unemployed, a UIF card (blue card) or discharge certificate from the previous employer
  • Medical History and report for a disability grant
  • Proof of war service in the case of war veterans
  • Birth certificate – reflecting the ID number (13 digit) in respect of each child
  • Proof of income of the foster child concerned
  • An order of the Children’s Court
  • Proof of regular school attendance, if the child/ren is/are of school going age
  1. What documentation would I receive from the office as proof of application? The office will provide a receipt as proof of application. An approval or rejection letter would be provided
  1. Can the letter be printed in my language of choice? The letter can, upon the beneficiary’s request be printed in the language of their choice
  1. Can a beneficiary appeal against a rejection? Yes, all beneficiaries have a right to appeal against rejections.
  1. When should an appeal be made? An appeal should be made within 90 days from the time of receiving the rejection
  1. Can foster care be extended after the child has reached the age of 18 years? An extension order can be given in cases where the child still attends school
  1. Who qualifies for a War Veteran grant? All veterans 60 years and older or under 60 due to medical reasons who served in the South African Army during the First World War (1904 – 1918), Second World War (1939 - 1945) or the Zulu Uprising (1906)
