THE NEW IUPAC RULES AND NAMING SIMPLE MOLECULAR COMPOUNDS

A) Many metallic elements form more than one ion. Write the name of these ions using ous/ic

Fe2+……………….. Fe3+ ………………..

Hg2+……………….. Sn4+…………….…..

A newer method (called IUPAC) of showing which ion is being used indicates the charge on the ion, in brackets using Roman numerals. For example:

FeCl2 contains Fe2+ so it’s called iron(II) chloride

FeCl3 contains Fe3+ so it’s called iron(III) chloride

SnCl4 contains Sn4+ so it’s called tin(IV) chloride

** The older ous/ic method is not wrong and is still commonly used but the IUPAC method is gaining acceptance and has wider applications

Write the correct formula for each of the following.

1. mercury(II) iodide………………………..

2. tin(IV) oxide………………………..

3. lead(II) chlorate………………………..

4. chromium(III) sulfate………………………

5. uranium(V) bromide………………………..

6. plutonium(VI) phosphate………….…………

7. manganese(VII) sulfide………………………..

Write the correct name, using IUPAC rules for ...

8. U2O….…………………………………

9. BiBr3….…………………………………

10. Pu2S5….…………………………………

11. Pb(CO3)2….…………………………………

12. CuClO4….…………………………………

13. MnO3….…………………………………

14. Fe(BrO3)3….…………………………………

15. Sb2(SO4)5….…………………………………

B) For compounds that aren’t made from ions (no metals present) another method of naming is used. A prefix is attached to each elements’ name to show how many atoms of that element are in the compound.

mono = 1, di = 2, tri = 3, tetra = 4, penta = 5, hexa = 6

example:

COcarbon monoxide*

N2Odinitrogen oxide

P2S3diphosphorus trisulfide

CCl4carbon tetrachloride*

* “mono” is not used as a prefix for the first element

Write the correct formula for each of the following.

16. dinitrogen trioxide…………………..

17. iodine monochloride…………………..

18. dinitrogen tetroxide…………………..

19. tricarbon tetraphosphide…………………..

20. phosphorus pentafluoride…………………..

21. sulfur hexabromide…………………..

22. iodine heptafluoride…………………..

23. carbon disulfide…………………...

24. diarsenic trisulfate…………………..

25. sulfur trioxide…………………..

Write the correct name for each of the following.

26. CBr4……………………………………………..

27. XeCl6…………………………………………….

28. SiO2……………………………………………..

29. BF3……………………………………………..

30. CSe2……………………………………………..

31. P2O5……………………………………………..

32. NO……………………………………………..
