Mediation Service Research Internship

Role descriptionToynbee Hall is seeking an intern to undertake research into how a mediation service might benefit our service users and the local community. Against a backdrop of severe cuts to Legal Aid spending, the need for alternative arenas to the courtroom for the resolution of legal disputes will be much on the rise.
Toynbee Hall would like to explore how a mediation service would compliment our well established Free Legal Advice Centre that support thousands of people each year.
The intern’s responsibility would be to undertake desk and field research into the actual need of this service and Toynbee Hall’s capacity to support it. A summary report of the findings will be expected by the end of the internship.
This role provides a unique and interesting opportunity for the right person to develop knowledge about an expanding field of legal work in the context of an organisation whose free legal advice service is extremely well-respected.
Skills/experience sought
This role would lend itself to someone with the following skills/knowledge:
- An interest in developments in the delivery of legal services and their evolving nature
- Some legal background or knowledge of the legal system
- Excellent research skills and enjoys research
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including an ability to write succinctly
- An ability to work on your own initiative whilst not losing sight of the original brief
- Good organisation skills and a responsible attitude
- Strong interpersonal skills

Availability
The role is flexible, but ideally you will be able to commit 2-3 days a week for a period of three months starting June 2012.
