Term Three

Recognising God’s Call Through Conscience

Introduction

It has always been Catholic teaching that the conscience is where one hears God’s voice ‘echo in his or her own depths’. Conscience is the source of many human experiences, including the inner call to draw closer to God.

In this unit, they will learn that Catholics are called to believe that God sent the Holy Spirit to guide people’s consciences. Jesus was sent also to found the Church through which he helps people to develop and follow their consciences.

Students will reflect on the work of the Holy Spirit in the development of the Church as it spread through the world. Part of this will involve reflection on the life of St Maximilian Kolbe and how he developed his conscience through prayer and reflection. They will also consider the role of the Pope and the bishops as the teachers of the followers of Jesus in the Church. Finally, they will reflect on the place of religious orders in the renewal of the Church and the formation of people’s consciences.
