Bush 41 and the Persian Gulf War

Objective(s): TSW list the factors that led to U.S. intervention in the Persian Gulf War. USH 3f (DOK 1)

Materials: Computer, video clip, textbooks, construction paper, guided notes worksheet

Bell-Work: Imagine that you are extremely poor, but there is just one person standing in the way of you becoming the wealthiest person in your neighborhood. You could try to negotiate with this person, but you doubt talking would lead you to your desired outcome ($$$). Knowing that you have the necessary weapons to defeat this person would you

a)  attack the person

b)  attempt to negotiate a deal with them first

Set: Discuss Bell-work. Introduce objectives.

Procedures:

1)  Do Now (3 min)

2)  Set (4 min)

3)  TSW use the map on p. 885 to locate Kuwait, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Iran and the Persian Gulf on a Map (6 min)

4)  TTW provide background information about Iraq’s relationship with Kuwait . TSW take notes. (7 min)

5)  TTW provide information about the U.S. reasons for intervention in Kuwait. TSW take notes. (6 min)

6)  TCW watch a video clip of Saddam Hussein talking to Western hostages (3 min).

7)  TTW discuss Operation Dessert Storm and the outcome of the Persian Gulf War (6 min)

8)  TSW create a flow chart listing Iraqi reasons for invasion—US reason for intervention---and Outcomes of the war. Flow charts must include major players (Saddam Hussein, George Bush Sr.), Causes, Effects and Dates where relevant (11 min)

9)  Close (4 min)

1.  TTW restate the objectives

2.  TTW review class topics and introduce the next lesson on Clinton’s domestic policies.
