James presented a video of Michael Robbins performing with The Blarney Girls, the performance is at the Duluth Fall Festival in 2008 and they were performing Mairi’s Wedding.
Minute for the Arts. Chairman Getz asked for members to share their recent Art experiences. Michael led with more updates on where his bands have performed, he is also a member of The Border Collies. He has been at the Scottish Festival and at the City Festival Series in Wisconsin. Randy is singing in a summer chorus in Alpharetta. Ashley attended the Dream Car exhibit at the high Museum of Art as well as attending several concerts for various bands. Aaron went to see the Harry Potter and the Obnoxious Voice performance at New Dawn Theater with his grandchildren. Cindy was at a national dance competition in June and a teaching convention in Indianapolis where they had a wonderful park with family art in it. Vanessa has been gallery hoping since the last meeting. Marsha was in Shanghai China and there were 15 couples in a 2 mile stretch that were dressed up beautifully taking pictures, she thought of them as living art. She also let everyone know that Michael Dillon the artist that did Ascension is having a 3 day event in July and the invitation would be forwarded to them if they wanted to attend. Katrina’s son graduated from Auburn with a degree in Architecture and has just completed a large project and was published in Architecture Record for the Scout hut they completed. James also went to the Dream Car exhibit at the High Museum of Art. GG has been on a trip up the coast to see her daughter and granddaughters. All were wonderful experiences related to artistry of public arts.
Presentation of Results from Council Chat. James went over the result from the Community Chat at The Red Clay Theater. This was a small sample group (only 16 participants) that we asked what they would like to see DPAC do. The result were 26% Structural Changes to Red Clay, 25% Musical Performances, 16% murals, 8% Outdoor Sculpture, 8% Plays in the Park, 7% Art Walks, 6% Speaker Series, 4% Comedy Nights and had a “other” suggestion for City Wi-Fi. While this was a good exercise the committee thought the 26% for changes to red clay was probably skewed because that is where the event was held. This was also such a small group that it was suggested that this be done several more times with a larger crowd. Maybe this could be organized for the Farmers market, Food Truck Friday etc. With a larger focus group participating the committee feels we would get a more accurate result.
Presentation of the RFP Responses, Next Steps and Schedule... James introduced the 6 proposals we received for the RFP for the Public Art Master Plan. James also had 3 examples of “rating” forms as examples to use when evaluating these proposals. If the RFP we had a 60%/20%/20% review breakdown but the committee felt this needed to be broken out more to evaluate. These were the criteria decided on; 20% Approach, 20% Innovation, 20% Scope, 10% Deliverables, 10% relevance, 10% Appropriate Reimbursable costs and 10% for Time frame and availability. Katrina will update the form she has and it will be sent out no later than Monday. That will give the group until August 6th to return their forms to Kim to compile. At the August 13th meeting we will go over the proposals and try to come to a decision on who will be awarded the contract.
Other Business Bike Racks and Trash Cans James brought to the committee that the city has many projects where we are putting in bike racks and trash cans, the Mayor and council were wondering if DPAC could take on the project of helping to make this functional art. The committee would have artists submit proposals on what they would build for the city and as projects came up we would have functional “art” pieces that could be used. We had several slides of cities that have existing bike racks and trash cans that would be considered art. The committee thought this was a great idea and that it could be something after the RFP that they could put into motion.
Before I Die Wall and Bench Tiles Marsha Bomar brought the idea of the before I die wall to the committee. The committee watched a Candy Chung video who started the movement in New Orleans. This is a wall that we would paint in sidewalk chalk and several places that have “Before I Die______” and people can come by and write things they would like to do before they die. This wall will be behind the warehouse and Marsha and Billy will complete between now and labor Day. The concern was brought up about it being monitored for unappropriated comments. Marsha told them that the PIO office would be watching as well and the Police would monitor. This is something that the committee also discussed could be put up in the parks and all around town. The tiles will be painted by citizens and city staff and once we have them completed they will be used in several concrete benches that will be placed on the town green under the large tree by Park Café. These are under a tree with pine straw so there will be no problem cutting grass around them, they are concrete so we are not concerned with them being stolen. The tiles will be placed upstairs for council etc. to come by and paint them, they will have until July 28th to paint. It was also brought up that we need to have a structure for approval for new art ideas when they are brought to the city. It was determined that this would be something that could be addressed in the Public Art Master Plan.
Future Meeting Dates. The committee recognized that future DPAC meetings will be held on the second Wednesday of each month. The next meeting will be held onAugust 13th
There being no further business, GG Getz made a motion toadjourn the regular session of DPAC Meeting. Katrina seconded the motion. All voted in favor. The Regular Session of DPAC was closed at 8:08 p.m.
