iGEM Americas Regional Jamboree (2011) – Team E. colinoscopy (Gold Medalists)

International Genetically Engineered Machines (iGEM) is the premier student synthetic biology competition. It fosters scientific research and education by establishing and operating the Registry of Standard Biological Parts, a community collection of biological components. iGEM began in January of 2003 at MIT. The competition grew to 5 teams in 2004, 13 teams in 2005 - the first year that the competition grew internationally - 32 teams in 2006, 54 teams in 2007, 84 teams in 2008, 112 teams in 2009, 130 teams in 2010, and 165 teams in 2011. In 2011, I coached the first ever BYU iGEM team, Team E. colinoscopy. We designed an E. coli-based probe of colon health that should be practically useful for detecting pre-polyp cancer cells. The E. coli were engineered with an AND Gate to detect a subtle change in temperature AND reactive oxygen species. Our team won the gold medal at the Americas Region (North and South America) competition and was invited to participate in the world championship competition at MIT. It was an honor to be invited to represent the Americas at the world competition.
