Office Information/Purpose

The Office of Residence Life in the Department of Housing & Dining Services fosters an inclusive residence hall community to promote a transformative student experience and academic success through exemplary and innovative programs. The Office of Residence Life is charged with operational administration of 24 residence halls as well as community and student development for 7000 undergraduate students.

Job Summary:

The Graduate Assistant for the Hallett Multicultural Perspectives Program holds a 10 hours per week appointment with the Office of Residence Life. This graduate assistant will report directly to the Hallett Residence Hall Director and the Associate Director of Residence Life. The graduate will assist in the program operations of the Hallett Hall Multicultural Perspectives Program, the Lucille Berkeley Buchanan Community and the Spectrum Community, which are residential living/learning communities (LLC) in Hallett Hall. Hallett Hall serves predominately first-year students and is located on the central campus of CU Boulder. The residence hall director is a full-time master’s level administrator, living in the community. The Hallett Hall program includes 15 resident advisors and 5 peer mentors.

The Multicultural Perspectives LLC provides community and programming to students interested in social justice and diversity issues, and anyone with a passion to further their education of identities and cultural intersectionality. This program will

·  Focus on multicultural education and social justice issues through weekly dialogue with staff throughout the year

·  Encourage participation in campus wide programs and initiatives to further explore issues of social justice and diversity

·  Offer a variety of social and educational activities, including activities with CU Boulder staff and faculty

·  Connect students to various campus offices which will provide support for students living in the Multicultural Perspectives LLC community

·  Connect first-year students with both a peer mentor and a resident advisor who will be available on the floor to further support dialogue

The Lucile Berkeley Buchanan Community provides a supportive, social and communal space for students, specifically those identifying with elements of the African & Black Diaspora and their community allies. Students gain access to artifacts, critical conversation and educational programming that create an inclusive and productive atmosphere within the residence hall.

The Spectrum LLC provides community buildingand programming for gay, lesbian, transgender, queer, or any student passionate about equal rights for all students.

The assistantship provides multiple opportunities for the development of the following: educational philosophies; leadership and administrative skills; traditional student advising and consulting; research, writing, and presentation opportunities; networking with a variety of Student Affairs programs on campus and comprehensive professional experience.

Other position requirements include:

·  Be enrolled and maintain good academic standing in the Higher Education program throughout the course of employment.

·  No other employment may be held during the Graduate Assistant contract without prior permission from supervisor.

·  Breaks (fall, winter & spring) may require the Graduate Assistant’s presence on campus and/or involvement with committee tasks and other responsibilities. Time off during these breaks is at the discretion of the supervisor.

·  Follow all University of Colorado Boulder policies and procedures appropriately.

·  Work an average of 10 hours/week.

·  Contract length is 10 months, usually mid-August to mid-June.

Required Qualifications:

·  Candidates must have an earned Bachelor’s degree and be enrolled in the University of Denver Higher Education program

·  A demonstrated commitment to inclusive excellence

·  Excellent organizational, planning, interpersonal and communications skills

·  Ability to work independently and as a team member

·  A genuine interest and satisfaction in working with students, faculty and staff

Preferred Qualifications

·  Preference will be given to first year graduate students, but all students are welcome and encouraged to apply

·  Interest, desire and/or experience in the field of student affairs, specifically, Residence Life and living/learning communities

·  An ability and willingness to apply student development theory and concepts

Summary of Responsibilities: (including but not limited to)

Administrative

·  Strong written and verbal communication skills, involving reading and writing correspondence and dealing effectively with a broad range of students, as well as staff, faculty, parents, and the public

·  A basic understanding of computerized databases and information systems is highly desirable. Familiarity with Microsoft Office products (Word, Access, Excel, and Publisher) is essential

Programming and Advising

·  Ability to implement various programs/activities for the residential living/learning community

·  Coordinate evaluations of programs, and maintain program budgets

·  Facilitate various meetings with student leaders

Professional Conduct

·  Ability to work with students at a wide range of developmental levels is essential.

·  Collaborate with supervisor on all student and staff concerns

·  Respect and maintain student and staff confidentiality, except in cases that may be dangerous to individuals and/or the greater community

·  Demonstrate a positive, professional attitude throughout all responsibilities and interactions

·  Comply with all University of Colorado Boulder employee and student policies and codes of conduct

·  Work with students to develop intentional, positive behavior, cognitive, and affective growth in the areas of diversity, multiculturalism, and social justice

·  Attend staff meetings and assist in developing departmental goals and objectives

·  Collaborate with other departments and offices on campus

·  Demonstrate an on-going commitment to the principles of inclusive excellence through programming, campus collaborations, and/or involvement and participation in university/divisional inclusive excellence projects or initiatives

·  Contribute to departmental environmental sustainability efforts

Professional Development

·  Participate in pre-service staff training in August

·  Participate in various professional training sessions, student retreats and professional development discussions that occur throughout the academic year

Compensation:

·  10 hrs/week of labor

·  $7,250 stipend over 9 months

·  12 credit hours of tuition.
