*Our field trip to see “Pete the Cat” is on Wednesday, January 24. Thank you to our chaperones: Mrs. Vanderzanden, Mr. Bridges, Ms. Chand, Mrs. Lish, Mrs. McIntosh, Mrs. Carlson, Mrs. Brant, and myself. We will be taking Tri-Met busses to and from the play.

*Religion: The Holy Trinity is One God in Three Divine Persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.

*Apostles’ Creed: We are praying the Apostles’ Creed each morning in an attempt to memorize it by the end of the school year. A copy of the prayer is attached.

*School-wide Learning Expectations (SLEs): Ask your child to recite the Holy Cross SLEs while using sign language. All the third graders know them!

*Bible stories: The Flight to Egypt; The Boy Jesus in the Temple; The Baptism of Jesus

*Grammar: linking verbs; helping verbs; subject/verb agreement; past, present, & future verb tenses

*Math: Students used square centimeter tiles and square inch tiles to measure the area of shapes. They practiced finding the area of a shape by multiplying the length x width. Using the distributive property of multiplication to find the area of shapes was introduced this week.

*Saints Alive: The Christmas Story; St. Elizabeth Ann Seton

*Handwriting: K, U, Y, Z

*Literature: Technology Wins the Game by Mark Andrews skills: sequence of events; vocabulary; using text and graphic features

*Science: Simple machines make work easier for us! Students measured the load (effort) of lifting blocks with and without an inclined plane (ramp). They discovered that it took less effort to lift the blocks using an inclined plane. Schlessinger DVD: Simple Machines (screw, lever, inclined plane, wedge, wheel & axle, pulley)

*IXL Math and IXL Language Arts: area and verbs

*Read aloud: Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder; Pete the Cat by Eric Litwin

*Chrome Books: Keyboarding Without Tears; IXL Math; IXL Language Arts

*Journal: One of my favorite books is______. (7 complete sentences)

*Scholastic News: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

*Social Studies: The students are learning about physical and human characteristics of tribal regions in North America. The regions are the Arctic, Plains, Desert Southwest, Northeastern Woodlands, Southeastern Woodlands, and Pacific Northwest.

*Spelling: suffixes “er” and “ing”; antonyms

*Science Centers: Camouflage; Energy; More Work? Less Work?; Spiders & Insects; Sun, Moon, & Stars; We Eat Plants; Fur, Feathers, & Scales; What Goes Together?

*Literacy Centers: Antonyms, Synonyms, Top 10, Fairy Tale Riddles, Real or Make-Believe, It’s in the Mail, Similes, ABC Order
