Catalog Description:
Intended to enhance physical activity to improve overall health and quality of life. Students will learn knowledge of muscle groups, target heart rate, and the potential benefits of regular exercise which include improved cardiovascular endurance, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and improved body contour. Students will participate in aerobic activities, calisthenics and sculpting-isometric exercises, sports, conditioning, and flexibility training.
Course Description:
This course will enable the student to participate in moderate Zumba Toning group exercise that combines a fusion of high energy Latin, international, modern, and popular music, with unique moves and combinations, with and without the Zumba Toning sticks. The sticks are light weight (1.5 lbs.) in order to provide light resistance, which in turn tones and firms the muscles. The student will experience dynamic routines that feature aerobic/fitness interval training with a combination of fast and slow rhythms that tone and sculpt the body. This class is structured to be fun and friendly for the “first timer”, as well as challenging for the more advanced individual.

Zumba Toning provides the student with the opportunity to actively participate and increase awareness of the importance of developing a lifelong plan of health-enhancing behaviors that generate fitness and physical well-being.

Method of instruction: This course is an instructor demonstration with the students following the instructor’s movements and non-verbal instructions. Students will be taught in a group fitness environment.
Required text: There is not a required text for this course. However, you are required to mark your attendance of each class in the provided Grade Book. A completed medical history evaluation will be required before starting this course. There will be handouts available throughout this course covering various fitness topics.
Recommended equipment:
- Comfortable and supportive athletic shoes with non-marking soles
- Proper activity attire
- Bottle of water
- Small hand towel
Grading system: This class is based on the pass/fail system. A pass (P) indicates that a student has passed the course, but grade points do not accumulate on the transcript. A fail (F) indicates that a student has failed the course. Credits will be earned for a (P) grade, whereas no credits will be earned for a (F) grade. If a student withdraws by the withdrawal deadline, a withdraw (W) is reported on the transcript. No credit will be earned for a (W) grade.The last day to withdraw from the course is April 26th, 2013.
Auditing this course: if you want to participate in this class but not want to receive credit, you may enroll as an auditor. When you audit, you are not obligated to attend or participate in class activities. You do not get a reduced fee as an auditor. If you decide, however, to change from audit status to credit status, you must do so in person in the Admissions and Records Office during the official registration period. Should you wish to change from credit to audit, you must obtain the Audit Form from the Admissions and Records Office, have it signed my your instructors, and then return it to the Admissions and Records Offices during the first six weeks of the semester.
Participation: Those who actively participate in all of the classes offered during the semester will obtain a (P). According to the GBC Handbook (policy number), students are allowed up to three (3) absences without affecting their grade. If arrangements are made, additional absences may be allowed. Please discuss any absences with the instructor. In order to obtain the full benefits of the class, it is recommended you attend every class, as well as live a healthy lifestyle outside of class. You can make up missed classes by making arrangements with me any time during the semester. Should any special circumstances arise that may affect your participation in the class, please contact me right away. In short, if you have more than 3 unexcused missed classes, you will fail this course. On holidays when the campus is closed and during finals week, no class will be scheduled and will not count as an absence against you. Students who are enrolled both in this class and Student Open Workout may not apply the hours gained in class toward their Open Workout required time.
