1Baden-Württemberg: It is not possible to break down the figures according to age groups since these data are not collected in Baden-Württemberg. It is not possible to collect these data retrospectively without expending excessive effort. The figure given in each case is the total number of people in detention pending deportation who are deported or released from prisons in Baden-Württemberg within a particular year. The number of people in detention pending deportation whowere in detention on the last day of a particular year can be seen in the response to question 45 if required.

2Brandenburg: The larger number of women in detention pending deportation results from agreements with the Länder Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Those two Länder have arranged for womendetained pending deportation to be accommodated in Brandenburg’s facilities for detention pending deportation, as theydo not have capacities of their own for womendetained pending deportation.

This results in an increased total numberof detentions.

3Hesse: In 2008, 239 detainees were in police custodyat the police headquarters in Frankfurt am Main pending deportation. Since it is no longer possible to ascertain how many of these people were transferred to prison after two weeks, it may be assumed that some of them have been counted twice.

In 2009, 179 detainees were in police custody at the police headquarters in Frankfurt am Main pending deportation. Since it is no longer possible to ascertain how many of these people were transferred to prison after two weeks, it may be assumed that some of them have been counted twice.

The number of people detained in prison pending deportation in the period from 2008 to 2010 was ascertained on the basis of the data still available.

It is to be noted that the EDP programs usedbyprison offices only allow limited data to be accessed for this period; invarious prisons in particular, data is only available on the current year and the previous year.

For 2008 to 2010, data has been obtained insofar as it was still possible to do so. It was not possible in retrospect to obtain all the data requested without expending excessive time and effort.

In the case of women in detention pending deportation, it was no longer to differentiate according to age groups for the entire period under consideration.

4Schleswig-Holstein: Statisticsfor Schleswig-Holstein are only available in the form requested for the people accommodated in the immigration detention facility in Rendsburg. It accommodates only male detainees over 16 years of age pending deportation.

Frequently, there are considerable doubts as to the statements made by supposed minors concerning their age, which are generally not backed by any documentary evidence. In Schleswig-Holstein in 2009, for example, medico-legal opinions were obtained concerning the age of four of the 17 supposedly minor detainees (see*). In allfour cases, it was ascertained that the individuals concerned had reached the age of majority.
