COMMISSIONING OF NEW EXTRAORDINARY

MINISTERS OF THE EUCHARIST

This weekend of June 5/6 is the solemn feast of The Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, also called Corpus Christi Sunday. At all Masses this weekend new Eucharistic Ministers will be commissioned. This commissioning follows the training sessions held the last week of May. The names of the new ministers will be sent to the Diocesan Offices in Pueblo.

NEWS THAT WILL AFFECT YOU

You may already have heard that Father KC will be leaving us, recalled to Nigeria by his religious order. His flight leaves July 28th, so he will be leaving here shortly before that. You will have an opportunity to say farewell the weekend of July 10th & 11th. We will have refreshments out in front of the church building and Father KC will be present after each of the masses.

Father Paul Ekeh, another Nigerian priest, ordained in 1997, but this time a diocesan priest rather than a member of a religious order, will be arriving here sometime around the end of June. Has been studying at Fordham University, but he and two other priest from the same diocese will be working in our Diocese of Pueblo for the next two years before returning to studies. We hope you will give Father Paul a warm welcome!

A FESTIVAL COMMITTEE MEETING WILL BE HELD AT THE PASTORAL CENTER ON WEDNESDAY, JUNE 9TH AT 6:30 PM. ANYONE INTERESTED IN HELPING WITH THE FESTIVAL IS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!

FLEA MARKET

Our Parish Festival Flea Market in conjunction with the Parish Festival will be on Saturday, June 12th, from 8:00 am to ? We will be collecting any usable items you have on Sunday, June 6th, in Sebastiani Gym from 1:00-5:00 pm. If you cannot bring your items to the gym please call the Pastoral Center 846-3369 and we will make arrangements for your items to be picked up.

ANOTHER OPTION FOR YOU

Ever wondered what to do when someone dies, you know the family does not want flowers and you don’t think the deceased needs any more masses offered? One option people sometimes choose is to have memorial contributions made to a charity. Along those lines, we want to suggest contributions to our Diocesan Ministry Fund campaign. We will report to the family of the deceased the names of persons making such contributions and the amount contributed. The DMF enables the many works of the Diocese of Pueblo, especially training for ministry (either as priests, deacons or lay persons). It is a fine way to honor a deceased person’s memory.

LITURGICAL MINISTER SCHEDULES FOR THE SUMMER MONTHS ARE AVAILABLE FOR PICKUP AT THE ENTRANCE OF THE CHURCH!

Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ

(Corpus Christi Sunday)

Today, June 6, is the solemn feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. This feast is celebrated on the second Sunday after Pentecost. Its origin was in the 12th century. At that time in the Church’s history, there was an exaggerated emphasis on the real presence of Christ in the consecrated bread to be adored to the exclusion of a fuller meaning of Eucharist as celebration, a meal to be eaten. People in the Middle Ages, feeling unworthy to receive Christ in Holy Communion, preferred to look at the Blessed Sacrament. This led to the introduction of an elevation of the bread and cup during Mass and to public displays such as the Benediction ritual. This special solemnity was introduced to the universal Church in 1264. According to tradition, St. Thomas Aquinas wrote the prayers and hymns for the feast. Today, the former Feast of the Precious Blood on July 1 is incorporated in this solemnity.

Wednesday, June 9 is the feast of Ephraem of Syria, deacon, Doctor of the Church. Born in 306, Ephraem was a native of Nisibis (Mesopotamia). He was baptized in 324 and joined the cathedral school, where he later became headmaster. After the Persians captured Nisibis in 363, Ephraem became a monk, living in cave near Edessa. It was there that he wrote numerous hymns that earned him the title “Harp of the Holy Ghost.” He also wrote many defenses of the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. Ephraem died in 373 and was named a Doctor of the Church in 1920. He is the patron of Syria.

SYMBOLS OF THE CHURCH

Birds and Grapes: From ancient times comes this motif often found on sarcophagi. It symbolizes the faithful feeding on the grapes, the blood of Christ.

The Cup: The cup is a symbol of the blood of Christ and of the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Grapes: A bunch of grapes signifies the sacrament of the Eucharist.

Wheat: Heads of wheat symbolize the Bread of Life (Mark 14:22).

A SEASONAL REMINDER

As the days of Spring and Summer usher in warmer weather, ladies and young women, please remember that the clothing you wear to weekend and weekday Masses, be modest and appropriate. Short skirts, halter tops, short shorts, revealing tops and clothing that exposes more than it covers should not be worn to Mass. Please be respectful.
