(J.R.S. 134)

Offered by: Senator Lyons of Chittenden County, Senator Ankeney of Chittenden County, Senator Condos of Chittenden County, Senator Leddy of Chittenden County, Senator Munt of Chittenden County and Senator Snelling of Chittenden County.

Whereas, having won the Division II boys ice hockey championship in 1998, the Champlain Valley Union High School (CVU) Crusaders were desirous to repeat this accomplishment as a Division I entrant, and

Whereas, the Crusaders proved to be nearly invincible as they captured the Metro League championship with a nearly perfect 10-0-1 league record, and

Whereas, in the Division I final at the University of Vermont’s Gutterson Field House, top-seeded CVU confronted their rivals, the number-two-seeded Rice Memorial High School, and

Whereas, this excitingly close and predominantly defensive contest did not show any scoring activity until Rice posted a goal with 2:55 remaining in the opening period, and

Whereas, the Rice lead evaporated as Kyle Brennan scored an unassisted goal with 1:14 remaining in the second period, and

Whereas, the game remained at a 1-1 deadlock until, with 2:47 left in regulation play, Crusader Peter Lenes scored the seemingly final goal with the able assistance of teammate Kyle Brennan, and

Whereas, Rice was not prepared to simply call it a game, as it quickly rebounded with a power play goal with only 1:06 still to play in the third period, and

Whereas, junior starting center Pat Haley, who had been the subject of close Rice attention all evening, scored on a breakaway overtime play to cement the Crusaders’ 3-2 victory and their first Division I boys ice hockey championship, and

Whereas, this outstanding ice hockey team, consisting of Colin MacNeil, Keith Francis, Pat Haley, Brandt Nelson, Brian Ford, Chris Talbert, Peter Lenes, Chester Martin, Bryan Hulvey, Dan Parent, Ryan McGinnis, Dan Austin, Kyle Brennan, David Pinckney, Charlie Gundlach, Adam Brady, Matt MacKinnon, Ned Castle and goalie Jon Day, who earned Metro Player of the Year honors, showed how a unified team effort will result in a successful season, and

Whereas, Head Coach Bill Bodette and assistant coaches Ted Castle and Doug Hopper inspired the team through careful instruction and enthusiastic support of their players, now therefore be it
