Prologue:Bridgette

A young Sioux woman becomes sick, and gets bed ridden, she becomes feverish, delirious, and develops a bad cough. The father of this family kneels on the kitchen floor, begging the mother to help.

The mother loads a shotgun multiple times, struggling with each time. She attends to shoot at people who are trying to get into their family business. Death plays a big role in this story with the parents. The mother dies of a heart attack, and ten years later the father dies of cancer.

Marie’s fate tells too much of the story to give anything away. She is one of the main characters in this book. Her story is powerful and suspenseful.

Quotes…. Bridgette/Kayla

“Marie stayed in her room all that morning, and when I passed the door I heard her coughing. I peered in once and saw her lying on the bed. She came out only long enough to set out lunch.” (David Hayden)

“The reason, Wesley, the reason Marie didn’t want to be examined by Frank is that he- he has. . . is that your brother has molested Indian girls.” (Gail)

“Wesley, your brother is raping these women. These girls. These Indian girls.” (Gail)

“I was beginning already to think of Uncle Frank as a criminal. I may not have been entirely convinced of his guilt, but the story my mother told was too lurid, too frightening, for me to continue thinking of my uncle in the way I always had. Charming, affable Uncle Frank was gone for good.” (David Hayden)

“And Marie Little Soldier? Her fate contains too much of the story for me to give away. A story that is now only mine to tell. I may not be the only witness left- there might still be someone in that small Montana town who remembers those events as well as I, but no one knew all three of these people better. And no one loved them more.” (David Hayden)

“What things? I’ll tell you what things. Your brother makes his patients –some of his patients-undress completely and get into indecent positions. He makes them jump up and down while he watches. He fondles their breasts.” (Gail)

Marie tells Gail about the things that Frank does with her and his other patients and Gail tries to tell Wesley what Marie says, but Wesley thinks it's just a simple misunderstanding by Marie because she’s an Indian girl so she is not used to seeing a real doctor and so she doesn’t know what the doctor should be doing with his patients.
