Shenzhen, China and Singapore: ACT Government Trade DelegationJune 2015
The ACTGovernment through Invest Canberra (Chief Minister, Treasury and Economic Development Directorate) is seeking expressions of interest from ACT companies wishing to join a business focused visit by the ACT Chief Minister to Shenzhen, China proposed for June 22– 24, 2015. The Chief Minister will also visit Singapore from June 21-22 for a series of business related engagements.
The ACT Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding for friendship exchange and economic cooperation with the City of Shenzhenin October 2014 to strengthen our relationship with the Shenzhen Government, business community, universities and educational institutions. It specifically aims to build opportunities for businessinnovation between our cities and support our entrepreneurial communities.
Shenzhen is one of the most successful of China’s ‘Special Economic Zones’. It is home to a small number of major Chinese high tech companies and is the Chinese base of a number of global technology companies. Shenzhen’s population numbers around 15 million and its economy is significant, not just in China but in global terms. The Chief Minister’s time in Shenzhen will focus on supporting the developing relationship around innovation, technology and higher education.
This expression of interest process aims to gauge the level of interest from individual ACT businesses to participate in the delegation and the likely level of in-market support required for programming around a visit.
The Trade Delegation would seek to leverage Canberra’s Capital City advantages and strength as an innovative service based economy delivering solutions to the public sector market. The Delegation would support companies with demonstrated market ready solutions in areas including:
- ICT;
- e-government;
- Services to government;
- Healthcare;
- Sport Science services; and
- Professional Services
The ACT Government will offer limited financial support for company participation. Companies that meet the ACT Trade Connect Program criteria will also be able to access funding support for travel and accommodation to a maximum of $5,000 on a dollar for dollar basis.
The program is also likely to include a small number of high level group networking events in Shenzhen involving the Chief Minister.
The Chief Minister’s time is Singapore is likely to be more restricted so no broad delegation program or support – by Austrade or the ACT Government - is contemplated at this stage. Companies may choose to make their own arrangements in Singapore or focus their time in Shenzhen where support will be provided.
Invest Canberra is currently negotiating with Austrade to provide business matching services to companies in Shenzhen.
