About Toulouse

Since the Middle Ages, Toulouse has been one of the main cultural centers of France, and it is now a pleasant and lively university town, with narrow cobble street and stately private hotels extending around the famous Capitole Square. The major city of the southwest, it's the gateway to the Pyrénées mountain range. On the banks of the Garonne River and the Canal du Midi – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city is also known as the “pink city” for its reddish bricks and tiles. Toulouse was a pioneer in commercial flights and the base of the first regular French airline L’Aeropostale. Toulouse might be a city with a distinguished historical past, but it is also a city of the future and the high-tech center of the aerospace industry in France. It is home to two huge aircraft makers - Airbus and Aérospatiale - and the National Center for Space Research has been headquartered here for more than 3 decades.

Sightseeing / Recreation

There is something for everyone to do and see when visiting Toulouse. Hiking in the Pyrénées is a 1- to 1 1/2 hour drive south to trail heads located in Saint Girons or Foix. There are several first class golf facilities in the area. Noteworthy is Toulouse Golf Club in Vieille, another excellent course is Toulouse Palmola (ranked 9th in France’s top 50 courses). To immerse yourself in the history of the area, visit the Basilique St. Sernin which is the city’s major monument, consecrated in 1096, it is the largest and finest Romanesque church extant in Europe. Other popular stops are the Musee des Augustins, Church of Les Jacobins and the Cathedral St. Etienne and the Air and Space Museum – Cite de L’Espace. The shopping districts of Toulouse include rue St. Rome and rue d’Alsace – Lorraine, and if antiquing interests you, head to rue Fermat. Toulouse offers a wide variety of dining experiences from modern French cuisine and dining while cruising the Canal du Midi, to Bistros, Coffee Shops and Brew Pubs.
