Name(s):
Building / Department / Team: High School Social Studies
Professional Development Opportunity
Title / Event /Activity: Iowa Teachers of Psychology Conference - Central College, Pella IA
Dates: Nov. 6, 2009
Plan: What & Why (Please feel free to use more space for your reflection)
What did you learn?
From the a.m. keynote, I learned strategies to incorporate Ecopsychology/Conservation psychology in little doses throughout my AP course
From the p.m. keynote I learned multiple examples and strategies for discussing the empirical data on homosexuality without having to engage in a religious debate.
Describe how this learning will improve instruction and student learning.
These strategies allow me to give students a common experience that we can then grow up to extend learning. As our student population continues to become more SES diverse, these strategies give us “common ground” in very low tech, but high experiential ways.
Do: Develop lessons: (Please feel free to attach the lesson &/or use more space)
Which Curriculum Learning Standards, Essential Questions &/or SIP Goals are aligned within this lesson?
·  Technology plan (& district goal)– I learned about Real Player –a free download – to maintain video clips that may not always remain on YouTube – since the clips I show are typical 3 minutes & under I am also hoping to store them on my flash drive rather than my desktop.
·  Iowa Core Curriculum – Being able to discuss topics such as ecological psychology and homosexuality, easily ties into the essential skills of behavioral sciences of “the influences on individual and group behavior and group decision making”, and “how social status, social groups, social change and social institutions influence individual and group behaviors”
·  Level 1 integration – The 2 sessions of teaching demonstrations provided me to specific examples of how to teach in alternative ways, thus reaching more students and a variety of learning styles (not having to rely on lecture) From the demos throughout the day, I have new demos for units in Methods, Development, Perception, Learning, Emotion, Motivation, and Cognition.
Which Teaching Standards are incorporated?
Although many standards are hit, the ones that are incorporated in the most overt way are Iowa Teaching Standard # 2 Demonstrates competence in content knowledge appropriate to the teaching position because of new content knowledge & strategies to be used; Iowa Teaching Standard #3 Demonstrates competence in planning and preparing for instruction, since units and lessons are already indentified for this new knowledge, and Iowa Teaching Standard #7 Engages in professional growth as this conference allowed me to interact with high school teachers, college professors and learning researchers in the field.
Form C will be completed & electronically turned in on March, 2010 .
