The Human Sciences Research Council Medal for Social Sciences and Humanities

The Human Sciences Research Council invites nominees for the HSRC Medal for the Social Sciences and Humanities. The Medal is awarded on an annual basis to a scholar who has made an outstanding contribution through his or her research and publications in any discipline and field in the social sciences and humanities.

Overarching criteria

For consideration, a nominee must have the following:

1.  a record of sustained academic excellence in the social sciences and humanities;

2.  an international reputation for his or her scholarship;

3.  a strong record of contribution to the public’s understanding of social sciences and/or humanities

4.  evidence of meaningful, impactful work over a period of time, e.g. impact on public policy, community interventions etc.

Qualifying criteria

Nominees must live and work in South Africa

Nomination process

Nominations must be submitted in writing, as per the attached format and can be e-mailed to the Director Stakeholder Relations and Communications, Ms Manusha Pillai on

Nominations will be accepted until the 30th of June 2017.

Selection and awarding

The HSRC will appoint an adjudication panel which will consider the nominations and select a winner.

The award will be presented during a ceremony hosted by the HSRC on the 31 August 2017.

Form of award

A medal and a monetary prize of R50000-00.
