EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Williamsburg Local School District
Superintendent Opportunity
CELEBRATING THE PAST
For the past seven years, under the leadership of Superintendent Jeff Weir and the Board of Education, Williamsburg Local Schools have been on a strong trajectory.
Academic performance is at an all-time high. After several consecutive years of steadily improving state performance in the Effective range,Williamsburg Schools achieved Excellent rating for the first time in district history for the 2010-2011 school year. This was a great achievement on behalf of our staff and administrators.
The district’s success extends outside the classroom as well. In recent years the Williamsburg Wildcats have earned league championships in boys football, basketball, and track. The Lady Cats are perennial powerhouses in volleyball, track, and softball (in 2011 the girls softball team advanced to the State playoff district finals, losing to the eventual state champs). The district has a strong partnership with the Williamsburg Junior Athletic Association, working together to build sustainable sport programs (last month Williamsburg won 4 of the 6 CBYBA championships in boys and girls basketball). Recent years our band, choir, and drama programs have enjoyed a passionate revival, with dozens of students showcasing their talents each quarter in concerts and plays. And our Academic Teams have captured several titles in recent years.Regardless of the activity or venue, Williamsburg students are “in it to win it”
Williamsburg Schools sit on solid financial ground. Three years ago our voters approved an operating levy increase—one of the few increases approved throughout Ohio in recent years. But the Board didn’t rely solely on the taxpayers to balance the budget. For the past several years the District has been making progressive cost reductions to keep pace with the State’s contribution reductions. And they’ve been a pioneer in creative cost reduction through shared services. As a result, Williamsburg Schools have been able to balance the budget and maintain cash reserves equivalent to about 10% of the annual budget.
The district enjoys strong community support. As mentioned earlier the Williamsburg community supported their schools by passing a levy increase. In 2011 the community rallied behind a public-private collaboration to fund a major renovation of the football/soccer stadium facilities donating their time, talents, and treasures to complete this Extreme Home (of the Wildcats) Make-over. Our local businesses are always great supporters of the school and our students so every winter we host those business leaders at our Business Appreciation Dinner, showcasing the great things happening at Williamsburg Schools and extending our sincere thanks for their ongoing support.Whether it’s a sporting event or a band concert, when the hear the crowd putting their hands together for our students you see our village motto in action: “Wildcat Pride, Community Wide!”
People outside our small community see the positive trends at Williamsburg too. Open enrollment is at an all-time high as parents in surrounding school districts see the positive things happening at Williamsburg and are opting to put their children’s education in our hands. And all the factors above culminated in Williamsburg Local Schools being recognized as a “Best Value” by the Cincinnati Enquirer.
