Purpose: to investigate what happens to the mass of gum as it is chewed, and make a bar graph of data comparing the masses before and after chewing.

Materials: gum, triple beam balance, graph paper, colored pencils

Procedures:

1.  Number your paper from 1 – 7 skipping spaces between lines.

2.  Answer the following Key Question: What happens to the mass of gum after it has been chewed for 10 minutes? Do you think the mass will increase, decrease or stay the same? Explain your answer. Write your answer on line 1.

3.  Find and record the total mass of the five pieces of gum without their individual wrappers. DO NOT PUT THE GUM DIRECTLY ON THE BALANCE PAN! Write your answer on line 2 of your paper.

4.  Each person should chew one piece of gum for 10 minutes. When you are finished put the gum back on the paper towel on the balance pan.

5.  While you are chewing you should fill out the rest of the classes gum data on your data table.

6.  Find the mass of the five pieces of gum after they have been chewed for 10 minutes. Put your answer on line 3 of your paper.

7.  Fill out your data table for the other groups gum masses.

8.  Create a bar graph using the data from your By Golly By Gum data table.

9.  Answer the following questions on lines 4-7.

a.  What happens to the mass of the gum after it is chewed for 10 minutes?

b.  What are the ingredients in your pack of gum?

c.  How did the brand or flavor of gum affect the amount of mass lost?

d.  What does the graph tell you?
