Welcome BBQ
Thank you to all of the students and their families who were able to come to our “Welcome BBQ” on Thursday, September 15th. We had an awesome turn out! Staff appreciated having a chance to meet with you all!
Volunteering
We are always looking to have parents and guardians involved in our school! If you are interested in coaching, supervising a club, offering enrichment cluster activities, please contact the school at 357-4097. Already this year we have up and running: soccer for boys and girls; cross-country; scratch coding and chess club.
Bus passes
Transportation for occasional drop-offs (ie. birthday parties, visiting a friend, sleep overs, or after school activities) will not be provided according to district policy 550-1.
School Policies
RMS is guided by Department of Education and District Policies. A summary of our general school policies is in the front of your child’s agenda. Please take time to read them before you sign page 8. Some examples of interest for our first week might include: use of cell phones (not allowed); appropriate dress (even in hot weather); closed campus (ie. stay at school all day and students must go home or be picked up by a parent or guardian) and behaviors not tolerated as listed in Policy 703-Positive Learning and Working Environment.
Policy 703:
When students disrupt the learning of others or violate Policy 703, we cannot support In School Suspensions. Out of School Suspension or assignment to home will be our only option. Further, placement of students throughout the day having difficulty in the classroom will be dealt with as follows: An Administrator will go to the classroom and determine if the student needs to go home immediately or may calm in the office. If the student goes back to the classroom and is removed from class a second time that day, a parent will be called to pick up their child. We hope that does not happen but appreciate that parents have a plan in place in the event that it does.
RMS Fund-Raising Campaign:
So far students have raised close to $2000 in sales. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we could double this amount by the end of the campaign which is Tuesday, October 11th! Funds raised will help supplement student activities and mental fitness goals.
Public Health Nurse Notice:
Getting Enough ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ’s
How much sleep is enough for children to function at their best? Typically, school-aged children need between 10−12 hours and teens need 8−10 hours of sleep each night. Every child’s sleep habits are different. Some need a lot of sleep while others can function on much less. Good sleep habits start at birth. It can be common for school-aged children to not get enough sleep with the increase in evening activities, later bedtimes, and homework. Signs that your child may not be getting enough sleep include changes in their mood (irritability, cranky, getting frustrated or upset easily), behaviour (non-compliance and hyperactivity), and cognitive ability (problems with attention, memory, decision making, etc.)
.
Tips to help your child sleep well:
Sleep Schedule. Bedtime and wake-up time should be about the same time everyday.
Bedtime Routine. Have a 20 to 30-minute bedtime routine that is the same every night.
Bedroom. Comfortable, quiet, and dark.
Snack. A light snack (such as milk and low-fat cheese) before bed is a good idea.
Screen Time. Keep the television out of the bedroom (TV, computer game playing, and other stimulating
activities at bedtime can cause sleep problems). Limit cell phone use before bed. Cell phones should be
turned off and not in the bedroom at bedtime.
Caffeine. Your child should avoid caffeine for at least 6 to 8 hours before bedtime. Caffeine can be found
in many types of soda, coffee, iced tea, and chocolate.
Evening Activities. The hour before bed should be a quiet time.
Naps. Very long naps or too many naps should be avoided (can affect nighttime sleeping).
Set Limits. Be clear on what time lights are off and how many stories you will read.

Report Cards
Anglophone School District West is in the third year of piloting a new Provincial Report Card. This year you will receive Achievement Report Cards in November, March and June. Teachers will be using PowerTeacher Pro and Gradebook to create these reports. You should start seeing assessment items come home since the first week of school. Teachers will use the following assessment scale to show how your child is doing with learning outcomes: (4+) Surpasses grade level expectations; (4) Excelling; (3+) Consistently Proficient; (3) Meeting; (2) Approaching; and (1) Working Below. We will not be using percentages or letter grades. In addition to the Provincial Report Cards, Ridgeview issues school-based Interim Reports in October, January and May to give parents information about how your child is doing academically and behaviorally.
Hi from Administration
Thanks for taking time to become familiar with the information in your child’s agenda. We appreciate you signing it each night as you follow your child’s daily progress. You also may use it to send notes back and forth to your child’s teacher. For school-wide activities, please call 357-4142 our RMS Tiger News Hotline to find out what is happening. It is updated every Friday!
