Change Title: Exploring potential barriers for home visitors when addressing developmental concerns
Team Name: FC Teams / Topic: DevPedi / Primary Driver: 3
Change # from Refined KDD:3,7 / Cycle #: 10
Start Date: 8/2/16
End Date: 9/5/16
Objective of Cycle
Collect Data (Learn)
Test a change
X Implement a change / Please describe:
  1. What do we want to accomplish?
Home visitors will increase the number of parents with concerns about their child’s development by changing the way they ask questions.
  1. How will we know a change is an improvement (indicators)?
There will be an increase in parents reporting concerns in their child’s development.
  1. What ideas do we have that will result in improvement (change to test)?Instead of asking a parent if they have any concerns regarding their child’s development during a home visit, home visitors will ask parents specific questions about their child’s ability to do specific tasks in various domains of development. Ex: Can your child pick up items using a pincher grasp, can your child point at pictures using their pointer finger, can your child put items in a container?

Questions we want to answer with this PDSA cycle /
  • Does asking parents about their child’s ability to do specific tasks illicit different results?
  • Does rephrasing the question allow for parents to have a better understanding of what you are actually asking?

Predictions /
  • By rephrasing the question about developmental concern, there will be an increase in parents who report a developmental concern.
  • By rephrasing the question about developmental concern, there will be no significant change in parents who report a concern.
  • By rephrasing the questions parents will have a better understanding of what home visitors mean by developmental concern
  • Rephrasing the question will not lead to a better understanding of what the home visitor means by developmental concern.

Tasks/Tools Needed to Complete the Cycle /
  • Discussion between home visitor and program supervisor/ manager
  • List specific questions for home visitors to ask parents to determine if there are parental concerns in any area of development.

Plan / Plan for this Test
  1. Who will implement the change?1 home visitor
  1. What– Discussion, home visitor and Program Supervisor/Manager
  1. Where–office
  1. When– During home visit
Plan for Collection of Data:
  1. Who– Supervisor and home visitors
  1. What –Reflective supervision/team meetings
  1. Where–Office
  1. When– Biweekly

Do / Was the test carried out as planned? Yes
What did you observe that wasn’t part of the plan? We didn’t observe anything that wasn’t part of the plan but the test was just a confirmation of the importance of the words you use.
Study / What did the data tell you?In revising the questions the home visitor uses in attempts to illicit parental concerns has significantly shown an increase in parental concerns being reported. The 1 home visitor that used the new questions had 3 families report parental concerns in 1 month.
What surprised you? We were struck by the fact that by changing the words that we used to ask something would bring about different responses—in such a big way.
Act
Adapt
X Adopt
Abandon / What changes are to be made to the process (decisions made/action to take)? All home visitors will ask specific questions about a child’s development when asking about parental concerns.
