Support for Events on Korean Culture and Arts at U.S. Universities
The Korea Foundation (KF), the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), and the Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) (hereafter referred to as the “Sponsors”) have joined forces to promote understanding of Korean culture and arts at U.S. universities and foster friendship among university students from a diversity of cultures and backgrounds. In particular, the Sponsors seek to encourage Korean-American or Korea-related student association to organize “Korean Cultural Day/Night”events that feature Korean films and food. These efforts represent a collaborative endeavor of the Sponsors together with the Korean Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Mirae Foundation, and the Korea Daily newspaper.
- Eligibility for Support
Eligible Applicants
Korean-American or Korea-related student associations of U.S. universities, including graduate schools.
Activities Eligible for Support
Korean film and food festivals, targeted for the mainstream students of U.S. universities, are eligible for funding support. Other cultural or academic activities, such as performances, seminars, or lectures will be considered as well.
a. Korean Film Festival
A set of four Korean films (A Moment to Remember (내 마음속의 지우개), Shadowless Sword (무영검), Stroke of Fire (취화선), and Marathon(말아톤), in DVD format with English subtitles) will be provided to the selected applicants for no charge by KITA, if one or more of these films will be shown at the university’s film festival. Other Korean films may be shown, however, the applicant will be responsible for their acquisition.
b. KoreanFood Festival
A “Korean Food Festival”should be presented in conjunction with the film festival to promote Korean food as well as to create a more festive atmosphere. In particular, applicants are encouraged to use the terms and descriptions outlined in the Korean Food Guide (in English) publication, which will be provided to applicants at no charge, upon request.
c.Other Korea-related Events
Seminars, presentations, and performances designed to help students at U.S. universities enhance their understanding of Korean culture and arts are also eligible for support. It is recommended that this cultural or academic activity be organized together with the film and food festivals. However, it can be undertaken as a separate event.
- Period
Events should be conducted during the period from October 1 through December 31, 2006. Each applicant should schedule the event date in consideration of its university’s academic calendar. Of note, a suggested date is on or around October 9, 2006, when Korea observes Hanguel Day, to celebrate the creation of Hanguel, which is recognized as one of the most scientific writing systems in the world.
- Event Support
The Sponsors intend to select thirty (30) student associations that will each be provided with financial support of $2,000 and a set of the Korean DVD films described above.

In addition to the provided application form, applicants may submit any additional materials to support the applicant’s event plans and previous activities undertaken to promote Korean culture.
- Deadline for Application
A hard copy and e-mail version of the application should be forwarded to the Korea Foundation Washington D.C. Office by no later than August 15, 2006. Please refer to the contact information below for the office and e-mail addresses.
- Notification of Support
Notification of the evaluation results and approval of support will be forwarded to individual applicants by September 1, 2006.
- Required Report
All recipient student associations are required to submit a written and electronic version of a project report within 30 days after the event’s conclusion, in accordance with the prescribed report form. The report should include photos and narrative descriptions, which may also be accessed at Internet sites of the sponsored organizations. Additional information on this matter will be provided to support recipients.
