The children who completed the questionnaire gave positive responses to their engagement in music lessons in school. One child from FS2 said that they “enjoy singing all the songs” whilst some children from upper KS2 said “I like it because you learn something which doesn’t need paper and pens” and “I like how our music teacher involves everybody.” It is clear that the children enjoy their music lessons, particular in upper KS2 where they enjoy the fact they are learning in a less informal way and can mix with each other to get creative.
What could be improved about music lessons in school?
Responses to this question have given me an insight into what could be incorporated into music lessons in schools. Children in FS1 and KS1 would like more opportunity to do some more singing, with some of them wanting to participate more in solos. Whilst in KS2 the theme was that the children would like to experiment with more types of instruments and sing songs which are more from their generation.
Do you take part in individual music or singing lessons? If so, why did you decide to take them up?
Out of the 14 children who took the questionnaire, 6 out of 14 of the children did not take part in outside music or singing lessons (including the choir and young voices). 5/14 of the participants take part in the choir or young voices. The remaining few of the participants take place in individual instrumental lessons. A lot of the reasons for joining was parental influence.
Do you enjoy singing in assemblies?
Yes No
All children said that they enjoy singing in assemblies. All children had some positive comments to say about singing in assemblies. A child in year 1 said she enjoyed it because “it is like a show.” Another reason given by a year 2 child was “it helps me feel relaxed.” Finally, a child in Year 4 commented “I like it because you get to sing your heart out and I like it” It is really positive to see that all children asked enjoyed singing in assemblies and it has a real community feel participating.
Do you feel that what you are learning in music is useful and interesting?
Yes No
100% of the children felt that what they were learning was interesting. However, some children didn’t believe it was always useful. One child in year 5 said “I find it interesting because you don’t know what’s out there until you have a go but I don’t find some of them useful because I most likely won’t go to where they play the instruments.” Another child (yr6) said “if you went and did music it would be useful.”
After the questionnaire, I asked the children if they did music in any other subjects. Most children from all classes said that they sang songs in maths to remember concepts but apart from that, no songs were used in any other subjects. This is a useful finding.
