Course Overview:

Learning about organizational behavior is a multidimential activity to include the study of organizational research, an analysis of skills needed to successfully function in the organization and the integration of the research activities with skill applications in the organizational setting.

Educational Goals: (from OBE department and not in rank order)

1. Provide students with an (clear) understanding of the nature of organization, insight into the

internal and external forces that influence organizational behavior and factors contributing to

organizational effectiveness, efficiencies and productivity.

2. Develop student’s analytical and problem-solving skills by providing contrasting frameworks, various perspectives and models to understand the behavior of humans in organizations.

3. Develop student’s awareness (appreciation) of (for) the role of human behavior in determining organizational effectiveness.

4. Improve student’s teamwork and team management skills by teaching the theory and process of teams and using teams in class exercises.

5. Develop student’s knowledge and value (appreciation) of the impact of global markets on organizational effectiveness.

6. Provide (the) conceptual foundations upon which other courses in the curriculum will stand.

7. Engage (excite) and interest the student in this dynamic field of study.

Course Requirements:

The first requirement of this class is to complete the assigned reading and assignments before class so that you are prepared to discuss the topic and apply the readings to the day’s activity. In groups, you will analyze experiential exercises and discussion questions. Active participation in these group discussions is important for your learning experience.

WebCT- A component of your course is being delivered on the Web using the Web-based course management system called WebCT. Within Web CT you can expect to find course announcements, lecture materials, online gradebook and communication tools which include individual mail, group discussions and challenges. For more information regarding WebCT go the WebCT Student Guide. Login directions include a Saclink account and recommended software and hardware. Go to http://online.csus.edu Click login myWebCT. Within WebCT ID textbox type your Saclink login. Within the password textbox, type in your SacLink password. Click Login and the myWebCT window will display. Click the course name OBE150_LA5-

Your grade will be composed of scores on four exams, group experiential exercises, challenge assessment assignments, and class participation. The components are described below:

Exams 200 points-50%

Exams will be in-class exams. These tests will consist of multiple choice questions. You must bring Scantron Form 882 to the exams with a #2 pencil.

Experiential (Group) Exercises: 90 points-22.5%

You will be working in small groups of 4-5 people to complete the experiential exercises as assigned. It is expected that you prepare for the experiential exercise prior to coming to class. Each question should be analyzed from your individual perspective. Once the groups are formed, all members need identify themselves with names recorded, a team leader will lead the discussion of the question, prepare the discussion to include the individual perspective, group findings and then overall comments as to impact of group findings on your individual perspective.

Challenge Assignments: 60 points-15%

You will be completing challenge assignments and preparing a summary of your results in written reports. Each challenge will provide information about you. You will need to calculate the results to these challenges exercises and answer a specific question for each challenge.

Participation: 20 points-5%

You are expected to attend class regularly and complete assigned readings before coming to class. If discussion questions are assigned, prepare answers to the discussion questions. You are expected to be an active participant in classroom discussions as well as group activities.

Summary Reports: 30 points-7.5% Upon completion of all Experiential exercises and Challenge exercise you will prepare two reports as directed in later section of this syllabus. The Challenge summary will consist of a portfolio of your individual and business perspective for 20 points and the Experiential Exercise will serve as a recap of all team assignments for 10 points.

All experiential exercises and challenge assessments are due within one week of the assignment date for full credit. No late work after two weeks from due date and late work will be penalized a point. All work that has been turned in at the end of the semester must be picked up at the OBE Department Office within two weeks of finals or it will be discarded.

Summary Reports: Upon completion of the last challenges and experiential exercises, you will prepare a summary report for each. The Challenge summary report should integrate all of the personal and work findings that you have discovered about yourself and provide an overall summary of key attributes about yourself. This report shall be typed for one to two pages double spaced. A second summary report should review the experiential exercises that were completed in the class. You should review the experiential exercises and identify what indicators that made each successful. Again this report should be typed in one or two pages doubled spaced. All assignments are due before the last week of classes.

Exams: There will be no make-up exams. If you are not able to take the exam on the designated date or location, you must make arrangements with the professor in advance of the exam for possible accommodations to be made at the testing center. You will be charged a $6 fee per exam by the testing center and must make your own arrangements in advance with the testing center.

There are 400 points available throughout the semester. The breakdown is as follows:
