Before Reading:

1. Let students know that today you will be reading a story about Harriet Tubman, and she was a slave who used self-determination to free herself and many other slaves.

2. Discuss with students all the vocabulary words and have students put each word in a sentence.

During Reading

1.Read the story, A Picture Book of Harriet Tubman, by David Adler.

2. Discuss with students how Harriet felt during the book. Questions include:

  • How did Harriet feel being a slave when she worked all day and never got paid?
  • How would you feel if you were Harriet?
  • What made Harriet continue to work hard to help people even though she knew if she got caught then she would be in serious trouble?

After Reading

1.Have students think of a time where they had to use determination in order to achieve a goal. Students will then write their stories of self-determination and share writing pieces with the class. Students will discuss how each of their stories might relate to the story of Harriet Tubman.
