GENERAL PRINCIPLES APPLIED TO THE SUPERVISION OF DOCTORAL STUDIES

  1. Both the supervisor and the doctoral student shall act in a way that enables open and direct communication between the two.
  2. The doctoral student and the supervisor shall agree on their meetings in a way that the commitment to the process is continuous. The aim of the meetings is to swap opinions and to discuss the central matters related to the doctoral studies and dissertation work. The aim is also to give the student a chance to benefit from the experience and knowledge of the supervisor.
  3. The commitment to the doctoral studies is target-oriented, and it shall be based on the study plan made by the student and accepted by the supervisor.
  4. The mutual commitment is possible only if the doctoral student takes an active role in their studies. The minimum requirement shall be that the student regularly completes studies, attends research seminar meetings, contributes to his or her research, and reports on the progress in the work as agreed.
  5. In mutual commitment, the student shall receive competent and individual guidance from the supervisor in an appropriate form and within the agreed timeframe.
  6. In mutual commitment to the studies, the supervisor shall expect progress in studies and research of the student as agreed in the accepted plan.
  7. The supervisor and the student shall inform each other of circumstances affecting the commitment to the studies. In case of the supervisor, these circumstances include, for example, leave of absence, work in another place, or other significant matters affecting the commitment. In case of the student, these circumstances include the inability to continue the studies actively, significant changes in the planned timetable for completing the studies, or other significant factors affecting the commitment.
