Instructions to Unit Leaders for Scout Sunday

Restrooms are located on the 3rd floor and are accessible by the elevator off of the church vestibule near the main entrance. Please use the facilities prior to the start of the ceremony.

This will be a Prayer Service, not a Mass. There will be no communion.

Please do not arrive at the Cathedral prior to 2:15.

There is to be no flash photography during the ceremony. In the past the Bishop/Archbishop has made themselves available for pictures after the ceremony

Upon arrival Scouts should make their way to front of the Cathedral for their assigned seating

The Adult Leader sitting with the Cub Scouts should arrive NO LATER THAN 2:15pm to check in and receive the Units large envelope. Boy Scouts packages will be distributed to the first one checking in for that Unit.

All materials will be distributed at the front of the Cathedral by members of the CCOS

Upon registration, you will receive a large envelope that contains the following:

  • Color-Coded award index cards. The cards contain the name of the Scout receiving the award. Please verify the names. Write in the phonetic pronunciation of names that may be difficult to pronounce. Do not distribute the cards until the award procession begins. The cards will be used to announce the Scouts name as they receive the award. There are 4 different color cards used:
  • Ad Altare Dei Pink
  • Pope Pius XIIGreen
  • Parvuli DeiYellow
  • Light of ChristBlue

The Unit Leader should keep the cards of Scouts who were not present for redemption at the conclusion of the ceremony. Rich Donovan will be available by the left altar after the ceremony.

  • One ‘Unit Leader’ will need to sit with Cub Scouts receiving an award The ratio used is 1 leader per 5 Cub Scouts. Boy Scouts will sit without leaders.

This is a Scouting event - all Scouts and leaders should be in dress uniform.

At the beginning of the Prayer Service you will have the opportunity to parade your Unit flag up the center aisle. After the procession the flags will be placed in the flag holders at the rear of the church until after the ceremony. At conclusion please make sure you take the PROPER Units flag.

Awards will be presented in the following order:

  • Ad Altare Dei
  • Pope Pius XII
  • Light of Christ
  • Parvuli Dei
  • Bishop Bayley Award
  • Pope Paul VI Unit Award
  • Pope john XXIII Unit Award
  • The Bronze Pelican
  • Saint George Emblem
  • Simon of Cyrene

Award Reception Procedure

Scout Awards:

  • Each recipient should have their color-coded card in their hand.
  • Award recipients will remain in their pew until the usher requests them to stand.
  • The Scouts will be led up the center aisle by an usher.
  • The Scout will present their card to Rich Donovan standing by the Altar rail.
  • The Scout will proceed up the steps to receive their award from the Bishop/Archbishop and shake his hand.
  • The Scout will then exit the Sanctuary by the rear door and will return to their pew by way of the side aisles.
  • Unit leaders are to remain in their pew to await the Scouts return.

Unit Awards:

  • There is no index card to be presented for this award. Simply wait until your Unit is called to come forward
  • Each unit is allowed to bring 2 adult leaders. In addition to that, the Boy Scout/Venture Crews can bring a Senior Patrol Leader or Crew Chief.
  • As the units are called proceed to the Bishop/Archbishop to receive the certificate and ribbon. No Unit flags are to be brought into the Sanctuary.
  • Proceed out the back of the Sanctuary to return to your seat.
  • The front right pew is reserved seating for Unit award leasers.

Adult Awards / Simon of Cyrene:

  • The front left pew is reserved seating for these Adult Awards
  • There is no index card to be presented for these awards. Simply wait until name is called to come forward
  • As the individuals are called proceed to the Bishop/Archbishop to receive the award.
  • Proceed out the back of the Sanctuary to return to your seat.
