Idec FA Series Modem Configuration Setup

Host PC Modem

An external modem needs to be connected to the computer’s serial port, COM 1. The modem is configured by Hyland Automation Controls, Inc. for use with the KEPserver DDE software or Windows Hyperterminal and the remote Idec FA-2J/FA-3S Programmable Controller. The Part Number for this modem is PFA-96-HOST-A. An internal modem may be used if the user accepts all responsibilities for configuring the modem’s initialization string. Many modems that claim compatibility with each other have minute differences that can be difficult and time consuming to determine. The host modem, PFA-96-HOST-A is programmed with the following initialization string:

AT &F E0 N1 Q0 V1 &C0 &D0 &K0 &Q6 \N0 &W0 &W1

The spaces between the modem commands are not necessary.

To review the host modem's settings for the proper configuration:

Connect to 9 Pin PC Serial Port using standard 25 Pin Male to 9 Pin Female Cable, Belkin Part Number F2L088-10 (The –10 indicates 10 foot length)

Host Modem (PC Modem) Configuration:

Use Windows Hyperterminal and type: AT&V to display the configuration

Host Modem Connections

The PFA-96-HOST-A modem connects to COM 1 or COM2 using the cable 25M-9F-10. After the PC has fully booted turn on the Power button on the front of the modem by pressing the switch on the right side and some of the modem’s LEDs will illuminate. The PC has to be configured to communicate with this modem. Go to Start/Settings/Control Panel/Modems in Windows to install the internal modem driver. Don’t let the PC find this modem. Select “Standard Modem” or “Standard 14400 Modem” from the list. Do not select Zoom modems from the drop down list. Set the communication parameters to COM 1, 9600 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit and Parity to None. Select 9600 baud as the maximum speed and be sure Flow Control and Use FIFO buffers are not checked.

Idec PLC Modem

The remote modems connected to the Idec PLC needs to be programmed with the following initialization string:

AT &F E0 N1 Q1 V1 &C0 &D0 &K0 &Q6 \N0 S0=1 &W0 &W1

The spaces between the modem commands are not necessary. This is the initialization string to be used on the remote modem, PFA-96-AA-FLD-A, which is manufactured by Zoom Telephonics and is their Model 360 VFXV.32BIS modem.

Modem Programming

The initialization string for both modems can be found on our website in the Technical Support section for Idec PLCs at: www.HylandAutomation.com. These can be copied to the appropriate subdirectory such as C:\Modem on the PC. These are written as batch files that run under MS-DOS and utilize COM 1 to program the modem. It may be easier to create a shortcut and place these batch files on the desktop to program the modems.

The Zoom modems can also be programmed using HyperTerminal which is included as part of Windows. Go to Start/Programs/Accessories/HyperTerminal/hyperterminal.exe. This needs to be setup for Direct Connect to COM 1, 9600 Baud, 8 Data Bits, 1 Stop Bit, and No Parity. The AT modem configuration commands can be typed directly in HyperTerminal. Be sure that the AT command starts each line of modem commands. Each initialization string cannot exceed 40 characters. To upload the present modem configuration type: AT&V

This will display the Active Profile and the two Stored Profiles, 0 and 1. All three of these configurations should match.

Remote Modem Connections

The remote modem is normally connected to the Idec FA-2J/FA-3S PLC using a straight through 25 pin male to male cable, Hyland Part Number 25M-25M-CLA-MOD. The modems require the AC adapter to be plugged into a 115 Volt A.C. outlet which provides 9 Volts D.C. to the modem.

The remote modem is setup to automatically answer an incoming call on the first ring. A dedicated phone line is required to enable phone calls to be received by the modem. Two RJ-11 Phone Jacks are provided on the modems to allow an extension telephone to utilize the same line if necessary. The FA-2J/FA-3S PLC will not initiate any phone calls. If any toll calls are made on the line it is from personnel using the same line.
