6th Grade Math Syllabus

2014- 2015

Mrs. Tolliver

Livingston Jr. High

I am looking forward to a brand new school year with new students! My goal is to empower my students mathematically by coaching them to be critical thinkers as well as scholars understanding our new concepts. Also, by building self-esteem each will be enabled to be positive and productive members of society.

Course Description:

Math class will be more hands-on this year than it has been in the past. Students will complete tasks/activities, projects and formative assessments to show understanding of the material. Communication, verbal feedback, written feedback, discussion, and questioning are very important.

Course GPS:

*  Number and Operations (Fractions, Decimals, and Percents)

*  Measurement

*  Geometry

*  Algebra

*  Data Analysis and Probability

Text: Go Math and Glencoe Math

I am very excited to have a textbook this year that follows our standards and can be used as a tool to help us reach our goals. The Go Math text along with the Glencoe Math will be utilized to help students achieve mastery of the Common Core Standards.

Assignments may include, but are not limited to:

*  Group work

*  Projects/tasks

*  Individual activities

*  Homework problems

*  Practice papers/worksheets

*  Journal entries

*  Warm ups

*Daily warm ups and journal entries are a crucial part of defining students’ metacognition of mathematical processes and concepts. Warm ups will tend to be a variety of math problems or a review of previous concepts. Journal entries will be content related, thought provoking questions.

Homework:

·  Homework will be given daily.

·  All homework must be completed in pencil.

·  All problems must be written down and must be attempted in the manner shown in class.

·  All work must be shown for credit unless I say otherwise.

·  Work should be legible.

·  Homework is a completion grade, if it is incomplete, the grade will be a zero.

·  Completed and attempted homework that meet the above criteria will be graded as 100.

Class Participation:

Students’ ideas and thought processes are important to the success in math class this year. We will constantly reflect on previous lessons as well as current ones.

As a student, you should:

*  Be an active participant in class discussions.

*  Question whenever necessary.

*  Do your best and keep organized

Grading Policy:

Grades will be based on actual performance and knowledge of content as evidenced by:

·  50%- quizzes ( all quizzes are done in class and students must demonstrate understanding of content by showing all work. No Calculators will be used.

·  40%- test (students are allowed to use calculators with all test)

·  10%- Homework/projects (Incomplete assignments will result in a zero.)

Work Habits:

Organizational skills – comes prepared to class, “pre-class” activities such as getting materials together as outlined by teacher

Participation – works collaboratively and individually, participates in class discussions

Use of time – effective use of time, timely completion of class work and homework

Ability to following directions – name on paper, adheres to procedures, listening skills

Initiative – begins work, prepares in advance, asks for help when needed, gathers needed materials without being told.

Supplies:

Needed
4 composition books / Highlighter
Colored pencils / Notebook paper
Pencils (wooden preferred) / Graph paper
Scientific Calculator
Wish List
Tissue / Ream of copy paper
Hand sanitizer / Dry erase markers
Disinfecting wipes

Behavior:

Behavior will be dealt by following the Discipline Plan outlined below. There will be no tolerance of the impeding of others’ learning.

1.  Warning

2.  Parent Contact

3.  Team Meeting

4.  Administrative Referral
