Job Description:Project Worker for Aged Veterans Project

HOURS:20 hours per week normally worked Monday to Friday but with the ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for which time off in lieu will be granted.

CONTRACT:18 Months to cover Aged Veterans Project starting October 2017

SALARY:£9.27

LOCATION:Beverley and travel throughout the East Riding of Yorkshire

The MoD Aged Veterans’ Fund has awarded a grant to improve provision and introduce new services to support older veterans.

The project provides a Project Worker to seek older veterans, working along-side their support groups, health, social care, housing, police and others to provide person-centred support, address immediate needs and boost the opportunities for social engagement.

The worker will recruit and comprehensively train volunteers. We will interlink into our current provision of specialist Information and Advice workers, Community Service teams.

A key feature will be to utilise veterans’ skills to become connected with communities through volunteering opportunities e.g. walking groups, men in sheds, handy persons, repairs and a variety of community, administration and particularly digital inclusion roles for connectivity and income maximisation.

Duties and key responsibilities:

  1. To take a lead role in developing and implementing the Veterans Project in East Riding
  1. To establish close links with organisations supporting veterans locally, e.g. Royal British Legion, SSAFA, RAFA, etc.
  1. To attend relevant meetings, workshops and events relating to the project as required
  1. To facilitate promotional events, activities and initiatives and provide support for relevant campaigns, commemorative occasions and reunions, etc.
  1. To support veterans to engage with their local community and develop and maintain social networks
  1. To make referrals to Age UK East Riding colleagues and other appropriate agencies and organisations for specialist support
  1. To recruit and train volunteers including veterans as peer support volunteers
  1. To link veterans into social inclusion opportunities including volunteering
  1. Identify gaps in provision for older veterans and facilitate the development of new activities
  1. To enable families and carers of veterans to access appropriate support
  1. To support local events and activities of particular interest to veterans
  1. To support campaigns and awareness events to promote the work of the project
  1. To work in a manner that facilitates inclusion and equalities.
  1. To carry out administrative work associated with the post as required.
  1. To be responsible for your own health and safety and that of others.
  1. To undertake any other tasks which may from time to time be required and which are commensurate with the general level of this post and as directed by the line manager.

Essential / Desirable
Education and training /
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritise tasks manage own workload and delegate tasks appropriately
  • IT skills using the full range of MS office packages
