DISTRICT #300 EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The District #300 Educational Foundation was organized during the 2005-2006 school year with the intent of fulfilling 3 major goals. One of these goal areas was to manage, award, and distribute the various scholarships held by or in conjunction with the foundation. With that theme in mind the foundation also became part of the Illinois Dollars for Scholars program. During the 2012-2013 school year, the District #300 Educational Foundation and affiliated organizations/groups will award a number of scholarships to the graduates to DuQuoin High School Class of 2013. Enclosed in this packet is an application including a listing of scholarships awarded through or in cooperation with the Foundation.

Filling out this application packet for the District #300 Educational Foundation Scholarship Program will qualify you for a number of these scholarships. There are 2 kinds of scholarships: 1.) the District #300 educational scholarships and 2.) the private, individual, and organizational scholarships. Please provide the following:

1) A District #300 Educational Foundation Scholarship form;

2) A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript;

3) A typed essay, consisting of approximately 250 words, giving general background information about the applicant, including the applicant’s interest of continuing their education beyond high school, and sharing of other information regarding the applicant that may be relevant to their consideration for this scholarship award;

4) Two letters of recommendation from teachers, administrators, and/or others who may be able to share information about the applicant’s desire to continue their education beyond high school.

The deadline for this application is February 22, 2013 and must be filed with the District # 300 Central Office, 845 East Jackson Street by that date. The recipients of these scholarships will be selected on or before April 19, 2013. The scholarship awards will be granted to the recipients in conjunction with the District #300 Educational Foundation dinner to be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013. DU QUOIN HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTIONS!

There are two (2) types of scholarships represented in this packet. The first type is the District # 300 Educational Foundation Scholarships. Students must have a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) or above for these foundation scholarships. The second type is the private, individual and organizational scholarships. The winners of the second type are generally decided by the individual or organization itself. Please read each description, follow the directions for each, and turn all materials in by the deadline.

Type # 1: District #300 Educational Foundation Scholarships

Educational Foundation Scholarships

The District #300 Educational Foundation was organized during the 2005-2006 school year with the intent of fulfilling 3 major goals. One of these goal areas was to manage, award, & distribute the various scholarships held by or in conjunction with the foundation. The District #300 Educational Foundation will award several scholarships to the graduating class. A scholarship committee of the foundation board was formed to select recipients of the scholarship awards based upon the areas of academic achievement, service, and/or demonstrated need. Students receiving these scholarships must have a 2.0 grade point average (GPA) or above. In previous years funding & contributions for these scholarships have included:

The relatives of members of the District #300 Educational Foundation Board are not eligible for these type # 1 scholarships.

Type # 2: Private , Individual, & Organizational Scholarships

Alongi Legacy Scholarship

The John R. Alongi family of DuQuoin has established the Alongi Legacy Scholarship to provide scholarship(s) to DuQuoin High School graduates who will be attending SIUC. The Alongi family recognizes the importance of higher education & wants to help make it possible for DHS students. The Alongi family trusts that their Legacy will be a symbol of gratitude for all that Southern Illinois University has blessed them with since 1933. Employees of Alongi’s will be given special consideration. Applicants with financial need will be given special consideration. No Alongi family member may apply.

Ann Paxton Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Ann Paxton (Strong), a 1982 graduate of DuQuoin High School. After graduation from high school, Ann completed a course in cosmetology & obtained her state license. She opened her own beauty shop above her dad’s office & later moved it to her home. For over twenty years, Ann touched the lives of hundreds of customers who enjoyed the warmth & wit she exuded every day. This scholarship is an annual $500 award offered to a DHS senior who plans to attend a technical school & become a cosmetologist.

DuQuoin High School Athletic Booster Club Scholarship

The DHS Athletic Booster Club will be sponsoring a $500 scholarship for one male and one female athlete. The club will be accepting nomination from each varsity coach of Golf, Cross Country, Volleyball, Football, Basketball, Track, Softball, Baseball and Swimming. The nominee must (1) be a senior athlete and must have lettered in the sport at least one year, (2) have at least a 2.75 GPA, (3) must have shown enthusiasm during practice & games, (4) must have good sportsmanship demonstrated at all times, (5) willing to assist the coach and other staff when needed, (6) must encourage teammates to do their very best, (7) does not display negative attitudes nor downgrade fellow teammates, (8) willing to assist the new athletes to be the best athlete they can be by teaching techniques developed throughout the athletic career and/or training, (9) must be respectful and cooperative.

DuQuoin Ladies Auxiliary VFW 513 Scholarship

The purposes and objective of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, a patriotic non-profit organization shall be, but not limited to, to contribute and participate in charitable, educational, and patriotic projects that benefit the community. The amount of $500 may be offered to a DHS senior, a child, grandchild, or sibling of a Veteran of the Armed Services, to attend any school of their choice. The scholarship is based on an overall evaluation of scholarship criteria as determined by the Ladies Auxiliary VFW scholarship committee.

DuQuoin Ministerial Alliance Scholarship

This scholarship is a “needs based” scholarship given by the Ministerial Alliance in the amount of $500 to any qualifying DHS senior. Applicants must receive necessary credits to graduate from DHS, must be planning to attend college after graduation, and must apply in writing to the Ministerial Alliance explaining their financial need and detailing their plans after college. Children of members of the DuQuoin Ministerial Alliance are exempt from receiving this scholarship.

DuQuoin Police Department Scholarships

With funds raised on behalf of members of the DuQuoin Police Department, two $500 scholarships are awarded to 2 graduating seniors of DuQuoin High School. The scholarships based on student financial need are individual awards being given in honor & memory of former DuQuoin Chief of Police Jim Booker & former City of DuQuoin Police and Fire Commissioner Richard Fronek.

DuQuoin State Bank Scholarship

As part of its continued effort to support the District #300 Educational Foundation, the DuQuoin State Bank will fund an annual scholarship. This scholarship will be an annual $1,000 award offered to a DuQuoin High School senior or graduate of DuQuoin High School who plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school.

Egyptian Officials Association-Southern Illinois Coaches Association Scholarship

This scholarship is funded through the joint effort of the Egyptian Officials & the Southern Illinois Coaches Association. For the past few years current & past members of the high school coaching staff & others have participated in an annual golf event that provides funds for scholarships to participating school districts. The award in the amount of $600 is split into two $300 scholarships & awarded to a male & a female graduating senior athlete selected by the high school coaching staff.

Harris Family Christian Scholarship

The Harris Family Christian Foundation awards an academic scholarship for graduating seniors at DuQuoin High School who have exemplified Christian principles during their academic career. The $1,000 award(s) will be given to seniors nominated by certain members of the faculty & subsequently selected by the Harris Family Christian Foundation Board. Kurt & Angie Harris are both graduates of DHS & support the children of the community & students of the school district through various charity efforts.

Harry “Corky” Strong Jr. Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Harry “Corky” Strong Jr., a 1946 graduate of DuQuoin High School. While attending DHS, Corky participated in speech & drama during an era that produced numerous state & national champions under the tutelage of Mr. R.P. Hibbs. Following graduation, his love & interest in the classics (movies, plays, stage production, etc.) never waned, and he was very proud of what his classmates had accomplished. The scholarship is an annual $500 award offered to a DHS senior who plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school. The student must be seeking a degree in speech, drama, or communications.

Jack Licata Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is named after Jack Licata, a 1946 graduate of DuQuoin High School & a 1952 graduate of the University of Missouri at Rolla. Jack Licata dedicated his adult career to the profession of civil engineering, while demonstrating an unwavering commitment to the importance of education. The scholarship will award a $1,000 scholarship to a DHS senior who expresses a desire to pursue a career in engineering & is enrolling in college immediately following high school graduation (If there are no suitable engineering majors, then the scholarship will go to students pursuing degrees in education, dentistry, or law.). A 250 word typed essay is required. It should set forth the applicant’s intention to pursue a career in engineering; indicate why the applicant wishes to be an engineer; specify the possible engineering discipline which the applicant hopes to study; and any special circumstances (including financial need) which the applicant desires be taken into account in the consideration of the application. This essay is above and beyond the essay used for all the other scholarships listed in this packet.

Jacob Craig Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship has been established in memory of Jacob Craig by the members of his family. It will consist of one annual scholarship in the amount of $1,000. Jacob was a 2010 graduate of DHS. Jacob touched the lives of many of his classmates, teammates, and teachers while a student at DHS. Jacob enjoyed working with computers and was pursuing a degree in computer science at the time of his death. The applicant for this scholarship will be required to have maintained a 3.0 GPA or better. The family wishes to award this scholarship to a student who will major in a computer science related field. Other criteria for this award will include community service and need.

Jeffery Allen Conner II Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Jeffery Allen Conner II, a 2005 graduate of DuQuoin High School. He was an outstanding athlete having played Indian football all four years of high school. He was a defensive starter (safety) his junior & senior year as well as an excellent receiver. Jeffery also was involved in track for 3 years & played basketball his freshmen year. He lost his life during a tragic accident as a spectator at a race track during the summer after high school graduation. Jeffery, who was a giving person, dreamed of being a policeman like his stepfather Pete who was a military policeman & then a correctional officer. Unfortunately, Jeffery never got to realize that dream. This scholarship is an annual $500 award offered to a DHS senior who plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school. The student must be seeking a degree in criminal justice or other community service occupation.

John & Wanda Rednour Family Scholarship

Based upon their support of the District #300 Educational Foundation & their continued support of students in District #300, the Rednour family has established the John & Wanda Family Scholarship. This scholarship will be an annual $1,000 award offered to a DuQuoin High School senior or graduate of DHS who plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school.

Lance Cpl Drew Uhles Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in memory of Drew Michael Uhles, a 2002 graduate of DuQuoin High School and an accomplished percussionist of the DuQuoin Marching Indians. He entered delayed enlistment into the Marines in December 2001 & after graduation, he went to basic training at Marine Corp Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. He fulfilled his lifelong dream in January 2003 by becoming a United States Marine. Shortly thereafter he was deployed to Iraq. His first tour was from June 2003 to October 2003. He then returned to Iraq in August 2004 and was killed in action on September 15, 2004. This $1,000 scholarship award is given to a DHS band senior who plans to attend an accredited two-year or four-year college, university, or technical school.

Leon L. Longshore Family Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is in the memory of Leon L. Longshore, a 1960 graduate of Du Quoin Township High School. An accomplished athlete in football, basketball and track, he received the 1960 Elk’s Outstanding Senior Athlete of the Year Award. Leon pursued a career in education with his Bachelors from Southern Illinois University-Carbondale and a Masters in Administration from the University of Illinois. He taught Junior High Mathematics from 1968-1987, served as J.B. Ward School principal from 1988-1994 and chose to return to the classroom until his retirement in 2001. Leon enjoyed teaching and loved seeing the “light turn on” when a student grasped a new concept.

This scholarship also remembers daughter, Lisa Kay, a 1981 Du Quoin High School graduate and 1984 graduate of Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in St. Louis, MO. She was a Registered Nurse with a Trauma Nurse Specialist. This annual $1,000 scholarship is being given to a student with an interest in math and pursuing a teaching career in middle school or elementary school education. (It is asked in your scholarship essay application or as an addendum that you include your reasons for choosing a career in teaching and special talents you will bring to the profession.)
