GENERAL GUIDELINES

Clean cage/bedding / Ensure proper procurement procedures for cage equipment. If the lab manually washes the cage equipment, regular microbiological monitoring should be performed.
Sufficient feed/water
Proper # animals/cage
Environmental Enrichment / Social housing is the expectation for social species. If singly housed, the arrangement must be described in a protocol along with how long it will last and why it is necessary.
Adequate light cycle / Automatic timer to ensure regular light/dark cycle as appropriate for the species. The light timer must be checked regularly to ensure proper cycling.
Proper waste disposal / Covered trash bins. Hazardous wastes are rendered safe before removal from facility.
Proper record-keeping & identification / Animal room log completed as appropriate? Cages have proper cage identification cards?
Room logs maintained / Six months of room logs should be available at each inspection.
Proper food/bedding storage / Sanitizable containers with tight-fitting lids. If food is not stored in its original bag, container should be labeled with milling date. Laboratory diets are generally good for up to 6 months after the milling date.
Regular room sanitation / Study area appears clean and uncluttered? Sanitizable construction materials? Absence of extraneous and/or non-sanitizable items?
Cage rack and shelf sanitation / Wipe down shelves at least once per week or more often as needed.
Mop and mop bucket sanitation / Rinse with a DLAM approved disinfectant between uses and replace as needed,
Appropriate temperature & humidity / High/low thermometer in place? Temperature/humidity recorded on a daily basis when animals in room? Within range for species? Humidity should generally be within 30-70% range; acceptable temperature range for rodents = 68-79 F.
Proper storage of hazardous materials / No chemicals/hazardous materials stored in proximity to study area.
Noise/activity level & vibration control / Noise levels should generally be kept below 85 dB. Area should be located away from other activities in the room,
Ventilation / Air flow rate and exhaust checked by Facilities Management? Air should be 100% exhausted to outside, negative to public corridors, and between 10-15 ACH. Air flow should be measured and rebalanced as necessary and evaluated annually.
SAM Doc / Submitted to ARC? Easily accessible?
Pest Control / Documented program including control of pests and insecticide use.
Campus Vet has access? / Key or combination to study area. Veterinary care available after hours, weekends, and holidays.
Personnel trained / Personnel have access to a current version of the approved ARC protocol.
Other / Doors must fit tightly within the frame to preclude animal escape.
The door from public hallways should be equipped with a door closer so that it is self-closing, and a door sweep should be installed at the bottom of the door.
Windows should generally be avoided to minimize security risks and problems with temperature control.
Floors, walls, and ceilings should be smooth, moisture resistant, nonabsorbent, and impact resistant.
Emergency power?
UCLA Animal Emergency Plan / Documentation of training on the plan. The plan is intended to help investigators consider critical resources and continuity of operations.
