A SENATE RESOLUTION
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF STAFF SERGEANT JASON C. HICKS ON SUNDAY, MARCH 23, 2003, AND CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the Senate was deeply saddened to learn that Staff Sergeant Jason C. Hicks, 25, died on Sunday, March 23, 2003. He was one of six airmen killed while on board a U.S. Air Force HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopter that crashed near Ghazni, Afghanistan; and
Whereas, the aircraft was on a mission to evacuate two Afghan children for medical treatment in U.S. facilities in Bagram when it crashed during a thunderstorm; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Hicks grew up in Jefferson, South Carolina and graduated from Central High School in Pageland in 1996 where upon graduation, he joined the Air Force and quickly decided he would pursue a career in the military; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Hicks bravely answered his country's call to arms in defense of world order and freedom by participating with his unit from Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Hicks had recently married Cristy Nollen Hicks on January 27, 2003, four days before returning to Afghanistan for his second tour; and
Whereas, family members say he died doing what he loved and that “it was the life he chose”; and
Whereas, Staff Sergeant Hicks will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery; and
Whereas, it is proper and fitting that the members of the Senate pause in their deliberations to note the passing of this dedicated soldier and son of the Palmetto State. Now, therefore,
That the members of the Senate, upon this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Staff Sergeant Jason C. Hicks on Sunday, March 23, 2003, and convey their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Staff Sergeant Jason C. Hicks.
