Data is the new gold

Cooperation between [email protected]. and PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI)

Hanover - Germany – April 25, 2017: The combination of Internet technology and traditional automation can lead to totally new business models. The data that has been gathered is usually the basis for these use cases, such as condition monitoring, or more generally: big data. The cooperation between [email protected]. and PROFIBUS & PROFINET International (PI)targets a standardized description of the data relevant for industrial automation.

However, this data is really only useful and manageable if it has an unambiguous semantic description. It makes a great difference for the analysis whether only the digital equivalent of 72.5 is given or the associated meaning and description, such as “operating temperature in Celsius,” is transmitted. The semantic description provides added value, which simplifies digital business models – and without which they may not even make economic sense.

The PI specifications such as the PA Profile or the Asset Management Record contain numerous such data models. These data models offer substantial, vendor-neutral added value for users. [email protected]. offers a cross-sector standard for the classification and unambiguous description of products and services. eCl@ss is an accepted and proven ISO/IEC-compliant industry standard which is used nationally and internationally.

Through this cooperation, eCl@ss and PI hope to combine the relevant available descriptions and develop them further for Industry 4.0 applications together. Karsten Schneider, PI Chairman, describes the goal of the cooperation thus: “The semantic data models that arise in this way allow concrete and simple use of big data in industrial automation.”

Dr. Gunther Kegel, member of the Managing Board of [email protected]., summarizes the benefit for its users thus: “eCl@ss is already in cooperation with numerous significant standardization organizations and associations. In PI we now also have a leading partner from the area of industrial communication, allowing us to extend our standard to completely new areas.”
