U.S. History –-- 2015

Franklin Roosevelt as President: World War II

We have studied the Roosevelt Administration’s response to the Great Depression with domestic programs of relief, recovery and reform. While the American public was consumed with their own economic problems, Europe, also experiencing economic strains, was moving toward military confrontation. In your world history course last year you studied the rise of totalitarian leaders such as Hitler and Stalin as well as the geopolitical shifts that led to the outbreak of war in 1939. In this unit we will look at the American role in World War II. We will explore how and why the U.S. emerged from the isolationism to assume military and diplomatic supremacy by the end of FDR’s presidency. Finally, we will investigate how this crucial period impacted the lives of average Americans from all walks of life, forever changing the public view and expectations of the federal government.
