Studying Programme in Neurosurgery in University of Latvia

  1. The aim:

The aim of studying course is to give students knowledge about the main damages of nerve system, clinical syndroms and most prevalent NS neurosurgical deseases as well as necessary skills to use these knowledge in practise.

Students therefore will know etiopatogenesis of illness, classification, symptoms, basis of diagnoses and differentialdiagnoses, the tactic of neurosurgery treatment and prognoses.

Students will know how to:

Evaluate methods of investigations, also realizing part of them (f.e., to accomplish patient`s neurological condition`s investigations, todolumbal puncture)

Evaluate condition of a patient in several stages of treatment

Compose a plan for patient`s investigation and treatment

Will know surgical treatment`s indications and methods

Give first help in acute periods of illness

  1. Necessary Grounding

Necessary grounding in central anatomy of peripheral nerve system, pathological anatomy, histology, physiology and pathological physiology, central and peripheral clinical features and syndroms of nerve system`s damages, as well as in basis of patient`s clinical care.

In frames of studying course students will take part in six 2-hour lectures and 6 practical lessons ( 5 academic hours/lessons ), which will take place in auditorium of the hospital, in department of neurosurgery.
