During the second nine weeks Science looks at Weather, Weather Patterns, and Changes in Water related to Weather. First grade students should know that weather is the condition of the outside air each day. By the end of the second nine weeks students should know:

Basic patterns of weather include temperature, precipitation, and sky conditions (sunny, cloudy, etc.).

Simple weather instruments tell us about weather.

Thermometers measure temperature (hot, cold).

Rain gauges help measure amount of precipitation (rain).

Wind vanes measure wind movement.

There are certain weather events such as thunderstorms, tornadoes, and hurricanes.

There are four seasons in a year.

Weather changes occur during different seasons.

Water in an open container disappears into the air over time, but water in a closed container does not.

The weight of water before freezing, after freezing, and after melting stays the same.

At home:

  • Talk to your child about the weather each day.
  • Watch the weather channel to see temperature and weather conditions.
  • Have your child pick out what clothes to wear each day based on weather conditions – have them explain why they picked those clothes.

During the second nine weeks students will be Using Maps inSocial Studies. First grade students will describe landforms, locate the 7 continents and the 4 major oceans, and find their location on a map.

At home:

Review the name of our city, county, state, and country with your child.

Help your child find their city, county, state, and country on a map.

Look at a map or globe with your child. Help your child find the 7 continents and 4 major oceans on a globe.
