Assistant Curator (Forging Ahead)
7 month contract
Purpose: To respond to public enquiries and to research and grow the 1940s-1960s object collection relating to BCLM: Forging Ahead. To assist the Collections Team in the documentation, administration, care and storage of the accessioned collections.
Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
Responsibilities
- To be the principal point of contact for all public collection enquiries (written, telephone and in-person) including dealing with offers of objects and material related to BCLM: Forging Ahead.
- To undertake documentation administration following on from new acquisitions as well as some retrospective documentation.
- To acquire objects and material for the accessioned collection, in-line with the Museum’s approved collecting policy and to grow the 1940s-1960s collection in line with BCLM: Forging Ahead
- To undertake research and other support to benefit the development of BCLM: Forging Ahead.
- To undertake and support Oral History activities, including interviewing, recording, cataloguing and summary writing.
- To promote intellectual and physical access to the Museum collections and associated research, in line with the Museum’s Collections Management Policy and priorities set by BCLM: Forging Ahead
- To assist with the development and supervision of volunteer teams.
- To implement optimum standards in collections care and storage.
- Respond to public enquiries.
- Collection care of Designated collection
- Support of the wider BCLM: Forging Ahead project
- Direct reporting to Head of Collections. Daily – Information giving/receiving
- Expected to establish regular – often daily – information sharing within Collections Team
- Expected to provide information and advice to members of other departments in relation to BCLM: Forging Ahead
- Supervision of volunteers.
- External heritage organisations and other partners.
(competencies, qualifications & experience)
Essential
- Experience in a similar role in a museum, gallery or heritage environment.
- Familiarity with current standards and methods of collections management.
- A good working knowledge over a wide range of social and industrial collections.
- A broad knowledge of Black Country history.
- Proven ability to work as part of a team.
- Experience of working with volunteers.
- A relevant degree
