Panagiotis Kanellopoulos is Assistant Professor of Music Education at the Department of Early Childhood Education, University of Thessaly, Volos, Greece. He received his MA and Ph.D. in music education from Reading University (UK).

He has taught music education courses at the University of the Aegean, and was previously Lecturer of music Education at the Department of Music Studies, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He has published articles in leading international publications and research journals (Educational Philosophy & Theory, Resonance, Psychology of Music, Philosophy of Music Education Review, Action Criticism and Theory for Music Education, Mousikos Logos), and has given papers in many international conferences and symposia. He has co-edited the volume Art in Education/Education in Art, published by Nissos in 2010. He has also been a reviewer for international journals and conferences in the field of music education.

His research interests include children’s musical improvisation, socio-cultural perspectives on music education, as well as philosophy of music education. He is active as a mandolinist, recording as a session musician.

Since 1996 Panagiotis Kanellopoulos has led many experimental educational workshops that focus on collective free improvisation with variable forces, in a wide range of different venues and contexts:

‘Playing with Sounds’, creative workshop for students, as part of the Benaki Museum Exhibition on the composer Yiorgos Sicilianos (2007);

‘Encountering the educational possibilities of improvisation’, invited lecture and workshop at the Music Department of Cyprus College (2007);

Improvisation Workshops with young children at the TellogleionMuseum, Thessaloniki (2003-2006); ‘experimentation, dialogue and personal creation’, workshops at the Kroustofono music education initiative, Thessaloniki, (2005-06, 2009);
