Report on Mullen High School

Natural CBI Team

Mullen High School Synopsis

Of the initial private high schools contacted, MullenHigh School was the only school willing to grant the CBI Team access to survey its students. Mullen was chosen as a target high school because of its low percentage of free-and-reduced lunches.

Our contact at Mullen, Janell Kloosterman (the Service Learning Coordinator), granted us access to survey students during their two lunch periods on Friday, October 30, 2009. To reduce costs Ryan Mazer, Natural’s owner, decided the CBI Team should pass out flyers with a link to an online survey, rather than administer and collect paper surveys. To provide an incentive for students to fill out the survey, Natural offered the chance to win a free adventure trip.

Of the 250 survey links that the CBI Team passed out, only five surveys were taken (a two percent response rate).

The CBI Team feels that the low response rate is partially attributable to the length of the link required to be entered. Going forward, the CBI Team recommends that Natural use a more manageable link, making it easier for students to complete the surveys.

Email correspondence between Janell Kloosterman and the CBI Team to follow.

Hi Jesse,
We are good with you conducting your survey. When would you like to do this and now many students do you need?

Janell,
That is great news. I will converse with my team members and find out
some free dates that will work. I think most of the group has
availability on Mondays and Fridays. We really do not have a set
number of students in mind. We are honestly looking to survey as many
as possible. How are you wanting us to conduct the survey? Do you want
us to come in during a lunch period or do you want us to pass surveys
around to teachers to administer to their classes? Please let me know
what works.
Thanks,
Jesse

The easiest would be coming in during lunch periods. Our lunches our 10:30- 12:28. You can set up a table in the lunchroom. Next Friday would work for us.

Next Friday works for all of us. Do you have an extra table or should
we bring our own. Also, when we arrive on Friday are you the point of
contact or is there someone else we need to converse with to figure
out where we can set up the table, etc.
Thanks,
Jesse

Hey Janell,
Our group has run into some issues with public school districts about
collecting contact information due to the Family Education Rights and
Privacy Act (FERPA). I just want to make sure that it is okay that we
include a contact section on the survey. I do not want to over step
any legality issues related FERPA. Thanks for the clarification.

Actually, that applies to us as well. Due to privacy issues you are not allowed to include a contact information section.

Janell,
Sorry to keep bugging you, but I have one last question. About how
many students would you guess we will be able to survey? We are trying
to estimate how many surveys we need to print.
Thanks,
Jesse

Would you mind sending us a copy of the survey you plan on handing out to the students.
Thanks,

Janell,
A link to the survey is:

We are wondering if instead of passing out full surveys, we can pass
out slips of paper with the link on them? We are trying to cut down on
our costs and our use of paper.
We also spoke with Chris Major and Ryan Mazer from Natural about our
concern of getting students to take the survey. They said they would
be willing to donate a free trip to a few students for participating
in the survey. The conflict we run into is the fact that we cannot
collect contact information (because of FERPA) to give away a free
trip. We were wondering if it would be alright to put something at the
end of the survey like…
Thank you for participating in the survey. If you would like to be
entered into a chance to win a free adventure trip visit:

Let me know what you think.

Hey Jesse,
Feel free to pass out slips rather than the survey, and I think giving away a free trip is a great idea!
Thanks for sending me the survey- it looks great.
On Friday, check in at the front desk, our receptionist will call me and I will meet you at the front.

Janell,
We have one more item to run by you...
Can we use the following link:

as opposed to:

We thought it might be easier for students to type in.
Sorry to keep bugging you.
Thanks,
Jesse

Hi Jesse,
I feel the second link you sent us is an advertisement for the Natural Fitness Guided Adventures, especially since the end of the survey directs them to a registration and a section for credit card information.
I think the survey monkey fulfills our request for not using the survey to promote a specific business.
Can you use that one?
Janell
