Unit: Who is Johnny Chapman/Appleseed?

Goals:

-  The students will gain more knowledge on Johnny Appleseed and understand Basic English usage mechanics, spelling, and sentence structure.

Objectives and Standards:

-  TLW read story and participate in whole class discussion

o  GLE 0001.1.1 Recognize end punctuation marks for statements, questions, and emotions.

o  GLE 0001.1.2 Recognize capitalization at the beginning of sentences.

o  GLE 0001.2.8 Participate in a group discussion.

§  Ask and respond to questions from teacher and other group members.

-  TLW trace name on paper by gluing Apple Jacks over name and discuss why first letter is always capitalized.

o  GLE 0001.1.3 Use capitalization when writing names.

o  GLE 0001.1.4 Spell own first and last name.

-  TLW do sequencing activity that relates to story then retell story-using booklet just made.

o  GLE 0001.2.1 Use appropriate listening skills.

o  GLE 0001.2.4 Summarize what has been heard using the logical sequence of events.

o  GLE 0001.2.9 Retell a story, describing the plot, characters, and setting.

Learning Styles:

-  The visual learner through read book aloud.

-  The tactile learner through hands on Apple Jack name activity.

-  The auditory learner through whole group discussion.

-  The musical learner through supplemental singing activity.

Materials and Media:

-  Book: “Johnny Appleseed” by: Jodie Shepherd

-  Construction paper

-  Apple Jacks Cereal

-  Glue

-  A file folder for each student with his or her name on it.

-  Johnny Appleseed Sequencing activity

-  Supplemental worksheets

Required Prior Knowledge:

-  Students should have prior knowledge of Johnny Appleseed through previous class discussions, picture of Johnny Appleseed, or videos of Johnny Appleseed.

Lesson (introduction):

-  Raise your hand if you can tell me whom we have been studying about?

-  Who is Johnny Chapman?

-  As I call your number tell me one thing that you remember about Johnny Appleseed.

-  Good Job!

-  So who do you think we will be studying about today?

Body:

- Read the book “Johnny Appleseed”

- Discuss the punctuation in the book as well as capitalization in the book.

- Discuss the book then review by completing sequencing book.

- As a group retell the story using the completed sequencing books. Students may do this in small groups or as a whole.

- Review Johnny Appleseed’s real name and discuss why the first letter in each name are capitalized.

- Students should then receive a file folder with their name on it. Students should glue on the Apple Jacks over their name. (See example)

- Hand out Apple Letters and have the students write their first name on one and their last on the other.

- Once they finish their Apple Names then can put them in their file folder with their Apple Jacks name on it.

Conclusion:

-  Show a thumb up if you learned something new today.

-  Show 2 thumbs up if you would like to share something you learned.

-  Raise your hand if you can tell me Johnny Appleseed’s real name.

-  When do we use a period?

-  Stand up if we capitalize the first letter of our names.

-  Sit down if you had a great day!

-  Discuss the lesson as a whole class.

-  Review sequencing chart.

-  Students may volunteer to show their Apple Names.
