Spring 2018 CTE Workshops and Webinars:

The CTE’s schedule of upcoming professional development opportunities are provided below. Sessions can be attended in person (Peoples building #202 in New Castle) or online (via this link).

New this semester: Pathways to Instructional Excellence (PIE) Virtual Discussion Sessions: Faculty are invited to attend the CTE’s virtual discussion forums, where faculty can ask questions, review teaching documents, or consult with a member of the CTE to complete any of our pathways learning units. These sessions are participant driven and are available for faculty at all stages of the pathways program.

Faculty are also encouraged to contact the CTE to schedule a one-on-one sessionfor any of our Pathways to Instructional Excellence topics if the following dates/times do not fit your schedule. Please send us an email at for more information.

JANUARY 2018

Tuesday 1/9 @ the Winter Tech Institute: Alternatives to Conventional Assessments. Various assessment techniques from problem-based, projects, group-work, and presentations will be displayed to help faculty generate alternatives to conventional assessments. Faculty will submit evidence of an alternative learning assessment; aimed at illustrating professional skill or competency relevant to the field of study. Thursday 1/11 @ 5:30pm: Becoming a Scholarly Practitioner. Participants will learn how to prepare for their first teaching assignment by learning how to find their generic syllabus and how to complete their personalized syllabus with learner-centered information. Participants will be introduced to the basics of backward design as an approach to course planning by examining how to carefully map out course learning objectives and instructional content over a seven (or fourteen) week schedule. Workshop content includes tips for engaging students, using active learning techniques, ice-breakers for the first night, and scheduling a five hour class session will be provided. Monday 1/22 @ 5:30pm: Utilizing Formative and Summative Assessment- This session introduces faculty to the assessment cycle and the importance of utilizing both formative and summative assessment opportunities. At the end of this unit, faculty will be able to: Distinguish between formative and summative assessment methods; schedule opportunities for both formative and summative assessment methods during a course's run; and explain how to close the loop on student assessment and the impact doing so has on student learning outcomes. Monday 2/26 @ 5:30pm: The Adult Learner. This session will focus on helping faculty create a classroom climate that contributes to facilitating academic success for the adult learner population. At the end of this session, faculty will be able to recognize the relevant differences between adult and traditional aged learners; develop methods for tailoring class learning experiences to meet the needs of the adult learner and design an assignment that illustrates how to engage and motivate the adult learner. Thursday 3/22 @ 5:30pm: Designing Writing Assignments- This session explores the different ways each faculty member can help contribute to the development of student writing skills in a course-relevant manner. At the end of this session, faculty will be able to: Articulate the role all faculty play, even non-writing instructors, in building student writing skills; differentiate between learning to write and writing to learn opportunities; and design a course and course-level appropriate writing assignment for students. APRIL 2018

Tuesday 4/10 @ 5:30pm: Improving the Feedback Provided to Students. This session will explore different means of improving our communication of course progress with students-from defining effective feedback to discussing the ins and outs of effective rubric design.
