FIFTH GRADE HEALTH NEWS

It won’t be long and these wonderful fifth graders will be on to middle school, wow! The fifth graders have been doing a great job and working hard in Health. We have just finished our second Health unit of the year, Mental, Emotional and Social Health. The lessons I’ve taught are: Self-esteem, Strengths/Weaknesses, Effectsof Emotions on the Body, Stress in the Body, Stress Management, Healthy Relationships, Communication, Problem Solving, Bullying and Support Systems. These are the lessons I’ve taught, but once in a while a class may miss Health for one reason or another.

In attempts to meet all my students’ needs, I use a variety of methods, strategies and activities to teach skills and concepts, including: videos, games, various reading, writing, drawing and coloring activities, and various small and large group verbal and movement activities.

On the standards-based report card, your child is getting three grades from me. One for grasping the standards I taught, one for respect and one for responsibility. If I assigned homework, that will be the majority of the responsibility grade.

Please take a few minutes to look through your child’s work and encourage him/her to share with you what we’ve learned. If you see anything that is not quite finished, it is also great reinforcement if you will encourage and help your child complete it, even though I do not need it back.

Thank you for your support and for reinforcing healthy habits and behaviors with your child.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Reed (Health/P.E.)
