Harnett Central Middle School 7th Semester Chorus Syllabus - Morrow/Dickens, Fall 2015
Out of respect for the art of music making, choir should NEVER need to be an “easy A.” Instead, we need to use the gift of song to teach more than just music. Our students need to learn reading skills and basic theory (Music Literacy), and proper vocal technique (Vocal Ability). Hel Perhaps more importantly, though, they need to learn how to employ self-discipline (Rehearsal Technique). Students will learn just being a good singer is not enough.
60% of the nine weeks grade
· Weekly “Making the Grade” based on Music Literacy (30 points), Vocal Ability (30 points) and Rehearsal Technique (40 points) as explained above.
· 3 week Listening log – turned in 2 times during the nine weeks (sample log attached)
o The music is available on the HCMS Chorus wikispace and if the student doesn’t have access to the internet the music will be put on a CD they can purchase for $1.00.
o Due Dates:
§ First Semester – 9/24, 10/22, 11/19, 1/12
§ Second Semester – 2/18, 3/17, 4/28
40% of the nine weeks grade includes some or all of the following:
· Showcase (during the school day)
· Evening Concert - requirement in line with the NC Common Core Standards in Music Education.
· Singing or written assessment
Concert Attire
Fine Arts t-shirt: If they have one they bought from last year, it will work for this year. If they don’t have one or have lost the one from last year they may purchase one for $10.00. A form is attached.
Navy blue jeans and tennis shoes
Fund Raiser: TBA, but we need everyone to participate!

Winter Concert, (First Semester) HCMS Aud. – December 3, 7 p.m.
Lillington Christmas Tree Lighting, Town Hall Clock ( First Semester)– December 12, 5:30 p.m.
Winter Showcase (First Semester) (during school day, your class period in the auditorium –December 14
Spring Concert, (Second Semester) HCMS Aud. – May 12, 7 p.m. HCMS Aud.
Spring Showcase (Second Semester)– May 23 during class periods, HCMS Aud.
