AFS offers year, semester, and summer programs for high school students and high school graduates in different parts of the world.

Broadreach

This program offers special interest study abroad opportunities worldwide in marine and animal science, ocean voyaging, language immersion, medicine, photography & the arts, and more.

CIEE

This program offers almost 200 study abroad programs around the world for high school and college students. Scholarship opportunities are available.

Experiment in International Living:

This Vermont org has programs all over the world, focused on arts and social change, language/culture, global citizenship, and environmental issues. Also offered are Leadership Institute programs around the world; if accepted, there is no cost to attend.

Global Citizen Year:

This program offers an intensive gap or “bridge” year after high school in Ecuador, India, Senegal, and Brazil that focuses on leadership training and global citizenship.

ISA:

ISA offers programs for high school and college students. For high school students, ISA has summer study abroad / volunteer sites in China, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, England, France, Italy, Peru, and Spain. Gap year programs and scholarship opportunities available.

Middlebury Interactive Languages:

MMLA offers 4-week language immersion programs at several college campuses in the US, as well as in Granada, Spain; Beijing, China; and Québec City, Québec, Canada, for students in 8th through 12th grades.

National Geographic Student Expeditions:

National Geographic offers summer travel programs in different parts of the world for students in grades 9-12. Themes include expeditions, conservation in action, photography, and community service.

Oxbridge:

Students in grades 8-12 can travel over the summer to Oxford, Cambridge, Paris, Montpellier, Barcelona, Salamanca, or New York City to take courses and participate in cultural enrichment.

Putney Student Travel:

Putney offers middle and high school programs in sites around the world focusing on community service, language learning, cultural exploration, and more.

Rotary Youth Exchange:

If you are between the ages of 15-19, consider studying abroad with your local Rotary Club! This exchange is between a few weeks to a year and involves living with a host family and possibly attending classes at a local school.

Rustic Pathways

This program offers service/special interest study abroad opportunities in Australia, Latin America, Africa, the Caribbean, India, China, and many Southeast Asian island countries.

School Year Abroad:

If you are about to be in the 11th or 12th grade, SYA has yearlong programs in Beijing, China; Rennes, France; Zaragoza, Spain; and Viterbo, Italy. Students stay with a host family, participate in cultural excursions, and attend classes at the SYA school in the target language (except for in Italy), with the exceptions of English and math, which are taught in English. Need-based and merit-based aid is available.

UVM Summer Study:

UVM offers programs for high school students after grades 10-12 in Costa Rica and Ireland, where students take a three-credit course (led by UVM faculty) and participate in cultural immersion activities.

United World Colleges (UWC)

UWC offers two-year International Baccalaureate programs as well as short-term programs on leadership, sustainability, and intercultural understanding at 15 sites across the world, with full and partial scholarships.

Where There Be Dragons:

This organization offers gap year, study abroad, and summer abroad programs in China, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East. Financial aid available.

Youth For Understanding:

Students between the ages of 15-19 have the opportunity to live in a homestay abroad while on a semester, year, or short-term program (4-8 weeks). Different sites around the world.
