MARC MADNESS:
FAJER’S ANNUAL NCAA SWEET SIXTEEN CONTEST

CONTEST RULES

(1) To enter, on the next page/other side of this sheet, print your name and fill out the Sweet Sixteen Bracket (by picking a winner in each available slot). Return the sheet by 4:30 p.m. on Thursday March 24 to Professor Fajer by e-mail, or by hard copy in person or to his assistant, Tina Sutton (Library Second Floor).

(2) To be a valid entry, your completed bracket must be internally consistent. That is, if you have Iowa State defeating Virginia in the round of 16, you cannot then insert Virginia as a winner in the following round.

(3) You don’t need to know anything about college basketball to participate. One of the 2001 winners correctly picked Duke to win the tournament because “Duke” was the name of her dog.

(4) There are four contests: one for Faculty & Staff, one for current Property D students, one for former Elements students (Fall 14 Sections B and D; Fall 15 Section D) and one for former Property & Upper Level students (Spring 14 Section D, Spring 15 Section A, Housing Discrim., and Religious Freedom)

(5) You receive points for each winner you correctly identify, scored as follows:

Round of 16: 1 x Seed of winning team

Round of 8: 3 x Seed of winning team

Semi-Finals: 7 x Seed of winning team

Finals: 15 x seed of winning team

For example, if you correctly pick North Carolina (a #1 seed) to defeat Indiana in the round of 16, you receive 1 point; if you correctly pick Indiana (a #5 seed) to defeat North Carolina, you receive 5 points. If you correctly pick Indiana to win in the semi-finals, you receive 35 points (7 x 5).

This system rewards correctly choosing upsets, but, historically, you almost always need to correctly select the overall tournament champion in order to win.

(6) The person with the highest total score in each contest will be declared the winner and taken out to dinner (and more importantly can claim bragging rights in the relevant group). Interim scores and the final results will be e-mailed to all entrants. If Professor Fajer gets the highest score in any contest (this has happened multiple times!), the person with the next highest score in that contest will receive the prize.
