Who can be a GEAR UP for College Advocate?

A GEAR UP for College advocate is anyone who is inspired to inspire others about the importance of going to college and learning what steps are needed to get there and be successful. Do you think going to college is important? Are you willing to share your perspective and college-related knowledge with students and their families? That makes you a GEAR UP for College Advocate!

How can I get involved with GEAR UP for College Week 2013?

As a GEAR UP for College Advocate, we invite you to visit classrooms or workshops to talk briefly (for 5-30 minutes) with students and families about the importance of going to college and share why you are a GEAR UP for College Advocate. We’ll provide support and assistance in scheduling your time at a school or community site – all you’ll need to do is spend a few minutes sharing your story. You’re also welcome to join us for other local GEAR UP for College Week activities, including INSERT INFORMATION ABOUT OTHER LOCAL ACTIVITIES HERE.

I’d be happy to talk briefly to students and/or their families. What tips do you have about what I should include in my short presentation?

We encourage you to focus on three main things during your GEAR UP for College Week presentation:

- Sharing your educational background

- Discussing the role your education has played in your career, and

- Explaining why you’re a supporter of GEAR UP and going to college

That being said, feel free to personalize your presentation and make it your own. Have a video you’d like to share or a guest you’d like to bring? That would be great, too!

Why is my involvement in GEAR UP for College Week so important?

Your commitment of 5-30 minutes can make a lifelong impact by helping students and their families understand the connection between education and career success and the importance of planning for life after graduation. In other words, your story helps bring these concepts to life!
