Re: Exemption for Liberal Studies Majors
The Education Department would like to request an exemption from this statement in the College Catalog:
5. Four units of upper-division credit earned in a major may be applied to
meeting the requirements of a minor. No upper-division credits may be
shared by two minors. (There is no limitation on the overlap of units
between two majors.)
The Liberal Studies major requires our students to complete a CONCENTRATION, which is three classes above and beyond the other Liberal Studies requirements. For example, the LS major requires 4 English classes (ENG 2, 6, 104, and 106), and if a student earns an English Concentration, they need to take three additional English classes. To strengthen their degree, some students desire to earn a Minor instead of a Concentration. We would like to provide these students the opportunity to earn that Minor by meeting the Minor Requirements of that particular department with the ability to use all three Concentration classes.
ENGLISH
-- Currently ENG 2, ENG 6, ENG 104, ENG 106 are required for LS Majors
-- If a student takes three classes above and beyond the requirement, with careful planning they could earn aminor:
· To satisfy the requirements for an Englishminor, students must complete 20 units of English, which must include at least 12 units of literature and at least 12 units of upper division coursework
· ENG 6, plus 2 literature classes
· ENG 104, ENG 106, plus 1 upper division
HISTORY
-- Currently HIS 7, HIS 9, HIS 178 are required for LS Majors
-- To earn a HISminor, he/she would need to take HIS 99, plus 3 upper division courses
· Requirements for aMinor: 20 units Required
· Lower-Division Course: 4 units HIS 099 Foundations of History (4)
· HIS 178, plus Upper-Division Courses: 16 units
o 8 units of Western (United States, Europe) history (NOTE: HIS 178 could count)
o 8 units of non-Western (Latin America, Middle East, Asia) history.
